Libertarian principles in 'Leave it to Beaver.' (ep 326) Congressmen and congresswomen could take a page out of the nostalgic classic series, "Leave it to Beaver." The interpersonal dynamics depicted in the series portray three elements of the libertarian ideals that are needed for functioning of the country. These are personal freedom and responsibility, courtesy and boundaries, and virtue. John Adams said that virtue is was required for a representative public to function. We ask the question if we have lost the virtue that was part of the fabric of 1960.

War is Entertainment! (ep 325) It has taken me a long time to recognize how entertaining war is! But after months of “propaganda“ the actual logistics by the military are fascinating, as long as they don’t report on how many enemy and civilian deaths take place. At the same time, it looks like this is a permanent dilemma for us humans. Clip Used:  https://youtu.be/sv9XNFpRdhg?si=BTCJmzZvRw-R1Tuw By: https://www.youtube.com/@MOVIECLIPS

Humor, Self-Deception & the Mind Games of Politics (ep 324) This a rebroadcast from March 31, 2021 Why do people believe things that clearly contradict reality? Why does humor often reveal truths that political debate hides? In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we explore the fascinating connection between humor, self-deception, and political belief systems. From cognitive dissonance to tribal thinking, politics is often less about logic and more about the psychological tricks our brains play on us. We discuss how comedy can expose contradictions in ideology, how voters rationalize bad policies, and why self-deception may be one of the most powerful forces shaping political narratives. Topics include: - The psychology behind political self-deception - Why humor is a powerful tool for revealing truth - Cognitive biases that influence voters - Tribalism and identity in modern politics - Why people defend ideas even when evidence says otherwise If you enjoy conversations that mix psychology, political philosophy, humor, and libertarian perspectives, this episode will give you plenty to think (and laugh) about. 🎧 Listen, question assumptions, and explore how the mind shapes politics.

The Real Problem with Drugs | Libertarians Talk Psychology – War on Drugs, Addiction & Government Failure This is a rebroadcast from ep 73 In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we examine the real problem with drugs and why government policies have consistently failed to address addiction and substance abuse. While governments struggle to manage even legal drugs like alcohol, prescription medications, and opioids, their approach to illegal drugs through the War on Drugs has been even more destructive. Decades of prohibition, criminalization, and enforcement have created black markets, fueled organized crime, and often made addiction problems worse rather than better. From a psychological and libertarian perspective, we discuss how human behavior, incentives, and public policy intersect when it comes to drugs. Why do prohibition policies fail? What psychological realities about addiction do policymakers ignore? And why have some countries taken approaches that reduce harm more effectively? We also explore how alternative drug policies used around the world, including harm reduction and decriminalization strategies, have produced better outcomes than the traditional War on Drugs model. Topics discussed include: • The psychology of addiction • Government failure in drug policy • The unintended consequences of prohibition • The War on Drugs and black markets • Harm reduction and alternative drug policies • What libertarian principles say about drug legalization and personal liberty If you're interested in psychology, economics, public policy, and libertarian philosophy, this episode offers a thoughtful discussion about why drug policy often goes wrong—and what could work better. Libertarians Talk Psychology: Bureaucracy, Organizational Behavior & Human Productivity (ep 322) This is a rebroadcast from episode 30 In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we explore the psychology behind bureaucracy through the lens of organizational behavior and libertarian thought. Why do bureaucratic systems grow? How do group dynamics shape decision-making? And what happens to human productivity when structure turns into stagnation? We break down the social group phenomena that define bureaucratic institutions — from diffusion of responsibility and hierarchy reinforcement to risk aversion and institutional inertia. Using insights from organizational psychology, we discuss how centralized systems impact creativity, innovation, and individual motivation. We also examine a powerful thematic clip from https://youtu.be/VveTsyjFlNA?si=s4umAGwAn6c1jRF7 that highlights the absurdity and complexity of intergalactic bureaucracy — and why it feels so familiar in our own world. If you're interested in psychology, libertarian philosophy, organizational reform, and the human side of productivity, this episode connects the dots between theory, culture, and real-world systems. 🎧 Listen, follow, and share if you enjoy deep dives into psychology and liberty.

Venezuela “Druthers” (ep 315) I am sorry to get myself upset about the administration’s indirect and even deceptive communications over Venezuela activities. This is nothing new from our government, but it does seem worse than usual. At first, this was about blowing up speed boats that could be taking illegal drugs to the United States. Never mind that Venezuela is admittedly a minor player in the drug trade. And never mind that the US population is willingly buying these drugs. Also, when are we going to admit that our heavy handed strategies for enforcing drug laws are not reducing drugs and are increasing our already world record high jail sentencing rates. Is this some sort of joke that we are violently arresting a foreign leader for possession of machine guns? Of course, this whole thing is probably about our legitimate fear of hemisphere influence by China, Russia, and Iran. So what is the red line that cannot be crossed before justified military intervention in a sovereign country? And should we apply that same red line definition for our country’s activities on the other side of the world? From Gold to Chaos: The Psychology of Fiat Money After 1971 (309) (This is a rebroadcast of episode 199) In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, we dive deep into one of the most defining economic turning points in modern U.S. history: 1971, the year President Nixon ended the Bretton Woods agreement and removed the dollar from the gold standard. This decision—often overlooked—set in motion decades of inflation, currency distortion, and financial instability that still affect every aspect of life today. Drawing on Dave Smith’s compelling explanation, we explore how radically different the world could have been if the U.S. had maintained a stable, sound money supply. Imagine a world without runaway inflation, without the boom-bust cycles created by loose monetary policy, and without the government’s ability to quietly tax citizens through currency debasement. Smith argues that abandoning gold didn’t just change the economy—it changed society, culture, and global power dynamics. We break down: - What exactly happened in 1971 - Why stable money is foundational to liberty and psychological well-being - How inflation quietly alters behavior, incentives, and family life - How fiat money fuels political overreach, endless wars, and corporate distortion - What individuals and communities can do now, in an unstable financial era - Sound money solutions, from decentralization to Bitcoin to local alternatives If you've ever wondered why everything feels more expensive, more chaotic, and more distorted than it used to, this episode connects the dots. Understanding 1971 is the first step—deciding what to do next is the challenge we tackle together. Clip from https://www.youtube.com/@PartOfTheProblem

Secrets Make Us Sick (ep 306) This is a reboardcast of ep. 180 In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, Julie dives deep into the hidden psychological mechanisms behind secrecy and its impact on individuals, groups, and society at large. She explores how groups naturally create boundaries to protect their identity and cohesion—but at a high cost. When secrecy becomes normalized, it not only isolates members from the outside world but also distorts truth, weakens integrity, and impairs sound decision-making. Julie connects these ideas to the broader political and social landscape, examining how excessive government document classification reflects an over-boundaried system that alienates citizens from vital information. By understanding the psychology of secrecy, we can better recognize how hidden agendas and restricted access to knowledge foster mistrust, manipulation, and corruption. Julie explains the difference between racism, which involves hostility or intent, and bias, which can occur without conscious awareness or malice. We explore implicit bias (unconscious) versus explicit bias (conscious), and how these affect perception, behavior, and policy. The conversation also challenges the effectiveness of diversity training programs aimed at changing individual attitudes. Instead, the evidence shows that targeting institutional disparities produces better outcomes—aligning with the Libertarian perspective that systems, not thought policing, should be the focus of reform.
