I am featuring the cover of “The Endless Stair later this month, by artist “Jack Fred”, which is on the other end of the spectrum.

I liked how super minimal it was, but still conveyed the “creepy ruins full of monsters vibe”.

I haven’t used pass/fail skill checks for that in a long time (because of your exact reasons), instead using degrees of success (less info on lower rolls) and repeated checks (if I hear them hit on something, they get a check to put pieces together).

An adventuring party tries to decide what to do with a captured goblin. The Lawful party member clearly wants to honor his word to the goblin that he wouldn’t be harmed if he surrendered, the Chaotic Guy has a dagger in hand for immediate murder hobo action. The Neutral character isn’t saying anything, i am guessing his player is in the bathroom or searching for Cheetos in the kitchen.

Anything the PCs care about drives plot, whether it’s yours, theirs, or ours.

The systems may favor one tone/genre or another, but you could always do “high fantasy” in OD&D, and murder hobo hex crawls in 5.5e. Most of the subsystems can be included/removed to get the gameplay you want.

I would love to see a matrix in the DMG explaining this.

The right way pause your TTRPG campaign: talk to your players, let them know what’s up, finish scheduled game times.

The wrong way to pause your game: keep things bottled up, disappear, cancel games night of.

Players: pauses happen because life happens. Be understanding.

Part of the reason I’m doing this, is to make people aware of all the great (and not so great) art produced in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. Also, it’s something fun to talk about.

I had a paladin who eventually insisted on destroying undead remains so they couldn’t be reanimated. He helped ghosts “go to the light”, and was haunted by the ghost of a child he killed accidentally.

The whole table cried when his paladin avenged her and she ascended to heaven. Very cathartic.

Nice take on Anya Taylor-Joy. 😎

Ok, it’s a cheap shot and I like her acting in The Northman and Queens Gambit.

I like to roll for skeletons and zombies to just resist the evil call of their master. It’s very rare, but it makes my players understand the plight of the undead: they aren’t just things. There really aren’t good necromancers in my campaigns, and I know that’s not popular with some people.

I always play undead as containing the soul of the person. Good souls are trapped and in agony, evil souls are enjoying it. Either way, destroying undead is almost always an act of good/law in my campaign.

So this image fits well.

One of my friends in his late 50’s like me insists on doing this himself. He fell out of a tree and knocked himself out. It’s worth a couple thousand bucks to me to not be in those situations.
