An Eastern quoll (Dasyurus viverrinus) under specialised UV illumination, showing the unique biofluorescent adaptations of the specimen. Under normal light, the animal, no larger than a house-cat, appears an ashy taupe adorned with white spots. Under the specialised light, the normally dull russet transforms into a wash of golden apricots and pinks, interspersed with electric and ice blues in the normally white margins. Contrary to assumption, no visible light is used: that is, all of the light and colour visible is the animal and its environment responding to the normally invisible UV.
Ever bumped into a marsupial after dark? Chances are you wouldn’t have if you could see different colours.

"A glowing wild eastern quoll’ Shot by Benjamin Alldridge, finalist in the Beaker Street Science Photography prize, one of several to be exhibited at Hobart’s Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery next month. “All of the light and colour in this image is the subject’s natural glow in response to invisible UV light, exploding from its natural sandy colouration. This is the first documentation of the species glowing in the wild and forms part of ongoing research into the impacts of light pollution.”

Last night’s bio-fluorescent walk at Golitha Falls saw two hours race by. Glad to find many others as enthused by the way it makes us look at lichen, fungi and invertebrates in a whole new way. Well, that was fun! I joined a #biofluorescence walk last night at Golitha Falls, in #Cornwall... and though we didn't find any fluorescing caterpillars, our special UV torches showed up some amazing fluorescing fungi, mosses, lichens, and rocks.
