Invasive rodent eradications in French Pacific islands: a critical analysis of past efforts Context The French Pacific Island territories are home to an exceptional terrestrial biodiversity that is threatened by invasive alien rodents causing drastic ecological damage, including the decline of endemic species.Aims This study compiled and analysed rodent eradication efforts in the French Pacific Island territories from 1982 to 2022, focusing on methods, challenges, and results.Methods We compiled data from the Database of Island Invasive Species Eradications and local reports. The dataset included a total of 85 eradication attempts conducted on 77 islands, and for each attempt, we extracted information on island size, targeted species, eradication techniques,and biosecurity measures. An attempt was considered successful if a monitoring carried out at least 2years after the eradication failed to detect any rodent.Key results In New Caledonia and Wallis, 90% of rodent eradications attempts were successful and concerned quite small island (<60ha). Eradication attempts in French Polynesia targeted larger islands but showed a lower success rate (56%). Brodifacoum was used in 97% of the operations, and biosecurity measures were uniformly applied, particularly in New Caledonia, where 76% of operations lacked re-invasion prevention protocols.Implications Our findings suggest that future eradication efforts should follow a global or territorial strategy prioritising islands for conservation. A more rigorous protocol, based on reliable data, is essential to success. Improved local stakeholder capacities is vital to safeguard the unique biodiversity of the French Pacific Island territories.

Prevalence and characteristics of potentially avoidable unplanned readmissions: a retrospective cohort study Objective Unplanned readmissions are key indicators of hospital care quality, yet research on potentially avoidable unplanned readmissions (PAURs) remains limited. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, causes, and predictors of PAURs in an Australian tertiary hospital.Methods This retrospective cohort study included all unplanned readmissions to a general medicine unit between 1 July and 30 September 2022, in South Australia. Patients aged ≥18years readmitted within 30days of discharge were included. A panel of senior clinicians assessed the preventability of each readmission using predefined criteria. Data on demographics, comorbidities, frailty, inflammatory markers, and discharge factors were collected. Predictors of PAURs were examined using multivariable logistic regression and LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) regression for sensitivity analysis.Results Among 381 readmissions, 80 (21%) were classified as potentially avoidable. The mean age was 68.7years (s.d. 18.2), and 58.3% were female. The most common cause of PAURs was relapse of the condition treated during the index admission (43%), followed by treatment-related complications (22.8%). Contributing factors included suboptimal care during the index admission (43.8%) and inadequate post-discharge follow-up (30%). Compared to non-avoidable readmissions, PAUR patients were older, more frequently readmitted within 7days, and had higher rates of coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure (CHF). They also had higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios (NLR) on admission. Multivariable analysis identified CHF (aOR 2.46, 95% CI 1.28–4.71) and elevated NLR (aOR 1.05, 95% CI 1.02–1.08) as independent predictors.Conclusions Over one in five readmissions were potentially avoidable, and only a few patient characteristics can predict avoidable readmissions.

Age and growth of the silky shark Carcharhinus falciformis (Muller & Henle, 1839) in the Ecuadorian Pacific Context Carcharhinus falciformis (silky shark) ranks third in elasmobranch landings in the Ecuadorian Pacific. However, there is limited and outdated information about its life history, making it challenging to propose management strategies.Aims To determine the age and growth parameters of C. falciformis in the southern Ecuadorian Pacific.Methods At the artisanal port ‘Playita Mía’, vertebral samples were collected from 290 specimens (161 females and 129 males) and sectioned sagittally to estimate age. A Bayesian and frequentist multimodel approach (von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and Logistic) was used for length-at-age analysis.Results Sizes ranged from 79.2 cm to 238cm total length (TL), with age groups estimated between 0 and 19years. The Bayesian von Bertalanffy growth model provided the best fit according to the leave-one-out information criterion (LOOIC). The estimates were: (1) for combined sexes, L∞=271.54cm TL, k=0.09years−1, and L0=72.21cm TL; (2) for females, L∞=271.83cm TL, k=0.09years−1, and L0=71.61cm TL; and (3) for males, L∞=273.60cm TL, k=0.08years−1, and L0=72.99cm TL.Conclusions This study demonstrates that C. falciformis is a slow-growing species, making it susceptible to overfishing.Implications The findings provide valuable information for future population and demographic analyses of this species.

Position statement on doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis for the prevention of bacterial sexually transmissible infections in Aotearoa New Zealand: the New Zealand Sexual Health Society Recent studies have demonstrated that doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) reduces the risk of syphilis and chlamydia in men who have sex with men and transgender women who have sex with men who are at risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). With several international organisations publishing guidance regarding doxy-PEP use, and substantial community and sector interest, the New Zealand Sexual Health Society drafted an interim statement and then convened a cross-sectoral meeting to discuss doxy-PEP benefits and risks, and review and revise the statement. There was strong agreement that doxy-PEP be considered as part of a comprehensive STI prevention approach to people assigned male sex at birth who have sex with men who are at risk of syphilis, primarily as an intervention to prevent syphilis. New Zealand Sexual Health Society advises that doxy-PEP be proactively offered to people assigned male sex at birth who have sex with men with a diagnosis of syphilis or two other bacterial STIs in the past 12months, and considered for others as outlined in the statement. Prescription of doxy-PEP should include counselling on the benefits and harms including side-effects and antimicrobial resistance, with users assisted to maximise the benefits of doxy-PEP while minimising overall antibiotic use. STI diagnostic considerations, and monitoring and surveillance are discussed.
