"The Aristocrat" In the Year of Our Lord 1905, within the halls of the opera house—where the sweet scent of burning incense reigned alongside a trembling boding of great upheavals—I chanced upon her. Behind the velvet curtain, the opening measures had already commenced; a melody of passion and fatum that now ascended unto the heavens, now flickered out, much like the very course of mortal existence. She appeared before mine eyes with a high coiffure, wherein voluminous tresses, like unto the waves of the sea, were entwined in a fanciful pattern. A collar of frilled jabot, resembling a cloud of lace, enveloped her form, lending her an air of majesty and a certain veiled pride. Her gaze was tranquil yet distant—as though she belonged not to this perishable age, but to some more refined realm where every gesture bears a sacred import, and silence outweighs the fleeting words of men. So consummate was that vision that I could not refrain; I wrought her likeness in metal, lest it vanish into the pitiless torrent of time. And though the memory of that place hath long since faded, she herself—this noble aristocrat—abideth with me still, like a silent relic that forever returneth my soul to that grand and restless era.
