It’s #lastfourwatched time

It’s the first week of #precodeapril so there’s a bunch of censor baiting crime thrillers. Edward G. Robinson and Kay Francis are the headliners actors this year.

Plus I caught a showing of the classic Chinese vampire movie.

Lola Lola: I knew you'd be back. They all come back for me.

The precode femme fatale became one of the most unforgettable symbols of the empowered woman. Marlene Dietrich etched her form into the era with The Blue Angel * 1930.

Pre Code April 2026 - be upsetting to the moral guardians, do crime This year for Pre-Code April I decided to focus on a topic that the Hays Code would absolutely put an end to, people being cool while doing crime. To that end a grabbed a bunch of classic crime capers...

It’s April which means it’s #precodeapril

It’s my second time doing it, and I’ve gone almost all in on crime. Particularly crime films starring Edward G. Robinson and Kay Francis.

Thanks to @filmfan1971.bsky.social for the challenge.

Exploring Gloria Swanson's filmography to end my #PreCodeApril, a gothic teleplay that would be right at home in the world of Dark Shadows, it does what the title says it does, and a solid low budget, thirsty western.

It's on sale right now for $14.97, which is too good a deal to pass up.

Everybody please watch TORCH SINGER (1933) on Criterion Channel.

Claudette Colbert is so good as a world-weary chanteuse daylighting as a radio kids show host.

But watch for Cora Sue Collins (1927-2025) who knocks her small-but-pivotal role out of the park. What a natural.

A huge thank you to Picturehouse Central for screening Tod Browning’s Freaks (1932) during #PreCodeApril, even if it was technically part of their Lynchspirations season. Watched it on the big screen last night, having not seen it since 1996.
