A juvenile/sub-adult red-tailed hawk perches on a fire escape on a red-brick building. The bird appears to be looking straight into the camera, but this is an optical illusion. He or she is perched on the top floor of a building looking out over a valley behind me (the shooter). This red-tail was unusually cooperative: I spotted it as I exited a grocery store with my arms full of grocery bags. "Don't go anywhere," I advised. Went down a long flight of stairs, two more blocks to my apartment, grabbed my camera, and hauled myself back up the stairs. The hawk was still there. How kind of it!
