The near side of the Moon, a light grey bumpy surface with white and dark spots. A large dark splotch dominates the right and the most prominent smaller dark splotch is located toward and between the positions of 7 and 8 on an analog clock. This is the Orientale basin, a nearly 600-mile-wide crater straddling the Moon’s near and far sides. Everything to the left of the crater is the far side of the Moon (which appears as a bumpy light grey). This is the hemisphere we don’t get to see from Earth because the Moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that it orbits round us. 📸: NASA. The way is winding. The moon, spellbinding.
