This plain blue copy of Hurricane Season is rather battered. I think the weathering marks work quite well in depicting the tone of the book.
#Booksof2026 17 - Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor (tr. Sophie Hughes).
Episodes of life following the murder of a "witch" in a Mexican village. The constant thread of misogyny and sexual violence gives a sense of the reality of life there, but does make for a challenging read.

A hand holds a book. There is green grass in the background. The books has white text on black, "The Wars of the Roses" by David Grummitt. The image is of medieval knights fighting in battle; some on horseback and some on foot. This is an image of the Battle of Barnet in 1471.
This didn't take long. An excellent view of the #WarsoftheRoses era which loses much of the soap-opera of Weir (which I enjoyed a lot) but puts back essential historiography and analysis. Very useful chapters on the era as a whole. Superb - useful for students. #DavidGrummitt #Booksof2026. No. 2

The Science Fiction Masterworks cover of Limbo by Bernard Wolfe.
#Booksof2026 16 - Limbo by Bernard Wolfe.
A dystopian science fiction where young men amputate their limbs to reduce their aggression. Similar in tone to Brave New World, including a not entirely satirical unpleasant misogynistic undercurrent. Don't think it has aged well.

7- A deeply personal, deeply moving inside view of that moment in 1989 when communism behind the Iron Curtain was washed away by people power. I also liked the last chapter from 2019 as a look back and a look forward #BookSky💙📚 #BooksOf2026 @fromtga.bsky.social
Cover of the book "Lancaster and York, the Wars of the Roses" by Alison Weir. The image is of a hand holding sword, from a medieval painting.
Finally finished this. Life has been getting in the way. A great history as soap opera; long on gossipy detail and character, shorter on the wide angle analysis than perhaps I would have preferred. Cracking read though. #Booksof2026 No2. #AlisonWeir #WarsoftheRoses

For a Cecelia Ahern book this took me a while to read. I liked it but definitely into favourite of others ! I enjoyed parts and not sure on other parks. It felt really quite slow too!

The paperback cover of Watling Street
#Booksof2026 15 - Watling Street by @johnhiggs.bsky.social
Much better than most travel books, especially the chapter on Northampton. And it doesn't fall into the usual Milton Keynes clichés. An interesting read.

#BooksOf2026 No.24 Doctor Who - Aliens of London by Joseph Lidster
#BooksOf2026 is by the wonderful @buehlmeister.bsky.social a brilliant read.
#BooksOf2026 number six is about one of my favourite espionage battles.
Paperback copy of the book lying on its side. The cover is mostly pink. On the front the books title is above a picture of pale hills; below is the author’s name.
5th Kazuo Ishiguro’s “A Pale View of Hills” is a delicately told and haunting tale of memory, loss, kindness and cruelty. I suspect it will stay with me for a long time. #BooksOf2026

Hardback copy of Free Agents lying on a desk. The title and author’s name (Kevin J Mitchell) are visible on the front and spine.
4th Thinking about thinking usually makes my brain hurt but @wiringthebrain.bsky.social writes with such clarity & authority that ‘Free Agents’ – his account of how evolution delivered up free will – was immensely rewarding. Recommend you freely choose to read it! #BooksOf2026
A Kindle showing the cover of ‘Ends of the Earth’ by Neil Shubin.
5- A semi-hopeful look at the science taking place in the polar regions, and what this means for us living with the consequences of a warming world. Not my usual type of read but I did enjoy it @neilshubin.bsky.social #BookSky💙📚 #BooksOf2026
The hardback cover of Dirty Kitchen by Jill Damatac
#Booksof2026 13 - Dirty Kitchen by Jill Damatac. It details her life as an undocumented child migrant in the USA. What struck me was her sense of grace and forgiveness towards her parents who were pretty horrible to her.
