![“We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Door.”
Buddy didn’t need me around to be a good police dog.
The super of our building in Riverdale was part of a particularly small and exclusive club: One of Buddy’s favorite people. Whenever he’d come by, Buddy would run over for some attention, giving him “the lean,” pressing his body to the super’s legs. If we saw our super on the way out of the building, he’d do the same.
The building super had a key to our apartment, and, while I was at work one day, he called and asked if he should let himself in to do a much-needed repair of my bathroom sink. I told him to go for it and to feel free to play with Buddy. What I didn’t expect was that Buddy wa’n’t playin’!
According to my building super, who called me at work with the details just a few minutes later, it went down like this: He let himself in with the spare key and Buddy dove at him, teeth bared! He quickly ran out, closing the door. The super tried to slowly open the door once more, thinking maybe Buddy needed a moment to recognize him. Y’know, Bud doesn’t usually get visitors in the middle of the day, but, surely, once he got a whiff of his good friend, Bud would chill out.
No.
Buddy tried to take his hand off the second time. My dog continued to snarl and growl “like a wild bear.” The super, laughing while telling me of his harrowing experience, was shocked at how Buddy absolutely “wouldn’t let [him] in without [me] at home.” He added, still laughing, “And I’m too scared to try again.”

On the way home, Emery carried our bag of fruit in one arm; I had Buddy’s leash in the other; with our otherwise free arms, we held hands. She was busy sniffing the fresh fruit in the bag; when there was a break in traffic, and, against the light, I gave her hand a light squeeze and said “Come on.” We were crossing Broadway, a busy avenue, and stopping on a small island in the middle of the busy intersection. We had a few more lanes to cross to get to my street. As we got the “walk” light, I squeezed her hand again and said, “OK, Emery, let’s go!” She laughed and said, “You have to stop talking to me like the dog.” I was taken aback a little by this. Was I doing that? I had to think about it. “Come on”; “OK, Buddy, let’s go.” And then I realized and responded: “Oh. No, I’m so sorry. I don’t mean to talk to you like I would the dog; it’s just that I talk to the dog the way I would a person.” Then she thought about it. And realized aloud, “Oh my god. You do! You talk to him in full sentences!” Nodding, I giggled a little. It was true. I said, yeah, if i was just commanding a dog like most people, “I wouldn’t say ‘OK, let’s go’ all happy-go-lucky; I’d just demand ‘Come!!’ or whatever.” She nodded, telling me she got it. Then she asked, “Why do you do that? I thought dogs learn better when you use easy commands. But you talk to Buddy in full sentences.” I responded simply: “How else will he learn his words?” She punched my arm, telling me I was a dope, and we went home…
