Persephius’ hand rests on her shoulder comfortingly, but she doesn’t seem to take notice. In the bottom image, Persephius looks down at her worriedly.
Persephius withdraws his hand from Alisaie’s shoulder, his expression of worry now completely absent as he looks over his shoulder with a look of distrust at the Exarch, as if debating whether it is safe to leave Alisaie in this state with him. Importantly, Persephius has not yet figured out who the Exarch is at this stage, so his distrust has not yet become personal. It is borne from the Exarch’s own behaviour of concealment and offering only-half truths.
Persephius turns to leave, and the Exarch watches him as he goes.
While not being actively observed by either Alisaie or Persephius, the Exarch’s careful mask slips, and he looks distraught that already Persephius is regarding him with a coldness he has never before experienced.
