An incredibly variegated, arched & ancient mount of stratified rock. It's mostly of eons old, mostly of igneous (volcanic) rock. The volcano cores nearby are taller but are so old, it's not apparent that this is what they are. This was likely a smaller upheaval of lava pushing other sediment layers upwards. It's actually insignificant looking by comparison, until you look more closely!
The same little mount of upheaval rock & sediment from across the salt flats. This time, from this distance, the flats are covered with briney water that is from the springtime, winter rains, the upwelling of groundwater and spring runoff from the mountains & valleys nearby. It's never been deep enough to be called a lake -although at least some water collects each spring. It never lasts for very long! It evaporates quickly by means of sunlight, wind & heat. It is also always spectacular, brief as it is.
