Abolishing vetoes in foreign&security policies is a good step, but not enough. The Lisbon Treaty abolished nearly all vetoes, but unanimity crept back into several policy areas where officially majority voting applies, as #EUCO is interfering in legislative files. Fundamental EU reform is needed

MAGA doesn’t just love Orban, they love #EUCO and the intergovernmental Europe that is weak and divided. A federal Union is MAGA’s nightmare.

👉 Breaking a promise made earlier is not how an institution that relies so much on trust, informal norms and commitment can function. If the other national leaders let the Orbán tactics prevail, #EUCO might end up in paralysis - and with it EU policymaking more broadly

👉 Tough bargaining, the pursuit of national interests, and veto threats have always been part of #EUCO politics. However, for #EUCO to remain effective, leaders must exercise self-restraint in not exaggerating domestic problems and exploiting the goodwill of others
The #EuropeanCouncil earlier this month ended with Orbán blocking the EU‘s €90bn package for Ukraine. So good, so normal (unfortunately).
