Index of enslaved people Index to family trees of people enslaved by John Tharp of Chippenham Park, Cambridgeshire, on his estates in Trelawny, St Ann & Westmoreland, Jamaica

Some children born into slavery have names expressing sorrow which may have been chosen by their parents. For example, 3 boys and a girl born on John Tharp's Jamaican plantations were named Hardtimes

Society for One-Place Studies webinar.
Tuesday 14 April 2026, 8 for 8.30pm UK time.
Image: Photo of an old drinking fountain and water trough in the village of Birchington. The drinking fountain has a small, tiled cover over it looking almost like a miniature church spire. The trough, in front of the fountain as we look at the scene, has several plants, bearing masses of pink flowers, planted in it. A road, cars, shops and houses can be seen in the background. Superimposed on the image are the words: From OPS to Heritage Open Day, with Alexandra Gilbert.

I completely agree - context matters. That’s why #FamilyHistory needs to embrace local, social, economic and political history too. Why was my ancestor arrested? It wasn’t an isolated assault but part of a large riot borne out of economic hardship in coal-mining, and early trade unionism.

Image: Photo of a small corner of a churchyard, with flowering Daffodils of at least two and possibly three varieties. Behind the flowers, part of the church can be seen; above them and to the left is part of a Yew tree, and below them is the stone wall forming part of the ha-ha which surrounds the church and its yard.

Daffodils in a quiet corner of the churchyard in my local #OnePlaceStudy, to kick off #OnePlaceWednesday. Use the hashtag to post about anything relating to #OnePlaceStudies, and to tell us about the places your #FamilyHistory / #LocalHistory / #OnePlaceStudy research has focussed on recently.

A family anecdote revealed… My Beake-related research has sent me deep into a series of wills for the family of Mary Mount, who married Robert Beake at Canterbury in 1689. While researching her parents I found the tree growing in unexpected ways, due to the early deaths of her father and maternal grandfather and subsequent remarriages of her mother and maternal grandmother (click image to enlarge):

An unexpected find in a legal document... #familyhistory #familystories #familyanecdotes #genealogy #heritage #lineage

Optical character recognition has made it possible to find records that would otherwise have never been discovered.

This treasure is from the Winnipeg Free Press in 1932. My father, Ian Cochrane, would have been 7. His sister Audrey would have been 4.

Send me your list Jenny. If it's too many for one day, I can at least get you started.

I always have a spreadsheet open to capture records someone wants.

My late mother-in-law, Kath. This photo was taken at my sister-in-law’s 60th birthday celebration in 2011. She loved being with so many friends and family members, and hearing all the stories from long ago.

Following Artemis II mission with interest and remembering my grandad Charlie Mayhew who died the same day Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon. Struck by how much older this group of astronauts is, with an average age of around 49, very different from the early space race days… 🚀 #familyhistory

F is for Framework As with any project, you need to sit down and scope out your plan and what you want to achieve from the project. A surname project or One-Name Study is no different. Perhaps though, what is different is when the researcher started their research and that might have a direct correlation to how the project progresses and how the material is kept.

D is for DNA I have written a lot previously about One-Name Studies (If you are new here, welcome! – you can read all the posts about researching surnames HERE). A number of members of the Guild of One-Name Studies have an associated DNA project that runs alongside their study. I am no exception and have a study with Family Tree DNA (
