This VLT pic "seems to have captured a cosmic hawk as it spans its wings. While the dark clouds in the middle of the image make up the head and body of the bird of prey, the filaments extending away from the body to the left and right compose its wings. Look at this wonder: the Trifid Nebula! In the center: red emission nebula (hydrogen gas excited by hot stars). Around: blue reflection nebula (diffuse starlight). The black 'streaks'? Dark dust divides it into three parts, hence the name 'Trifid'. The young stars in the center (visible as bright points) are 'igniting' the gas, while the dust blocks the light, creating those dark channels.
