‘The Hunt For Ben Solo’: Steven Soderbergh Uninterested in Potential Revival of the Project After Disney Leadership Change Fans have hoped that the changes in Disney’s leadership would have been enough to help revive the unmade film _Star Wars: The Hunt For Ben Solo_ , would-be director Steven Soderbergh considers it something in the past that he has little interest in revisiting. Talking to The Playlist, Steven Soderbergh stated that he felt that _The Hunt For Ben Solo_ was firmly a thing of the past, and that even if it were to escape development hell, he would not be interested in reviving the failed pitch. He started with a claim that Adam Driver’s passion for the project drove him to _Star Wars_ : > “[The movie pitch] was strictly Adam saying, ‘I think there’s still somewhere to go with this character.’ That’s how it started. Otherwise, I never in a million years would have found myself in that universe again. I don’t regret one minute of the time we spent working on that; I felt the work was good. It’s just good for you to be in that room and working on it… It’ll have a residual effect that will be unexpected at some point.” Steven Soderbergh was attached to direct _The Hunt For Ben Solo_ , the script written by Scott Z. Burns, produced by Rebecca Blunt, and which was enthusiastically supported by numerous Lucasfilm executives, including then-Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, current Lucasfilm president Dave Filoni, and head of development Carrie Beck. Soderbergh previously described his and Lucasfilm’s frustrations that the project failed to materialize, noting that “two and a half years of free work” was for naught. In any case, fans hoping that the “residual effect” he was referring to might be him revisiting the project should keep their expectations in check, as Steven Soderbergh now says that he does not feel like the project is going to materialize under new management. Even if it does, he has moved on, as he stated in no uncertain terms: > “As soon as it became apparent, okay, [the movie is] not gonna happen, I sat down and started writing [something else]. It’s like, ‘Okay, new scenario, let’s get cracking.’… You just gotta keep moving. Look, if it was gonna happen, it would have happened. It’s that simple.” The project was nixed by former Disney CEO Bob Iger and succession candidate Alan Bergman, who is the chairman of Disney Studios. Since then, Josh D’Amaro has taken over, so there is technically room for a change of heart at the Mouse House. As unlikely as this seems, Soderbergh’s disinterest means that the project will not move forward.
