Rick Atkinson's The British Are Coming.
Started reading Rick Atkinson's The British Are Coming, the first volume of his War of Independence trilogy. I love the language he uses and his attention to detail when describing the scenes. #histbookchat

Another collection of essays gathered up including one from @kabinettskriege.bsky.social. Another case of me insisting on a hard-to-come by physical book when it’s available for free as a pdf. 📚 #histbookchat
story as well. But at the same time, the bullshit parts really are irksome.
Good book, bad book, it's... a book lol. That makes 14 books for this year and now I have to figure out what to read next!

We nervously poked around. It was an intelligence treasure chest. We found boxes of papers, but I was feeling increasingly vulnerable. I decided that our job was to put a bookmark here for the big boys and get the hell out. That was what we did. The next day, an infantry company plus engineers flew in and scoured the camp. This was after a debate, I later learned, over whether to run an Arc Light bomb run on the site first or go in on the ground to seek more intel. Intel won the debate, which turned out to be right. Not only did they find helpful materials, they also found an American POW, a black enlisted Marine close to death, in one of the pits on the periphery of the camp. A miracle. The POW, a PFC from 4th Marines, had been missing for weeks. He was in desperate shape, but, according to a note he wrote me three months later, he made it to a VA facility in Pensacola and expected a full recovery. His note thanked us for saving his life and urged us to visit him. I read it to the whole company. It was an emotional moment, especially for Lee Duchamp, our one black colleague. This miracle made our burden lighter. I wrote back congratulating him on his courage and his recovery. Duchamp told me he wrote a separate note. I never did make it to Pensacola, but I’ll bet Duchamp did. That adventure turned out to be my last foray in the Khe Sanh area. Good riddance to that hellhole.
and frankly that's a problem.
I can find no mention anywhere else of a rescued enlisted African American POW in 1967.
Which is very problematic.

It crossed my mind that some of you might not know the BAT 21 story. Any of these three will fill in the blanks. (If it helps I have half a dozen books about the sinking of the Titanic and four books about the Andes ‘plane crash.) #histbookchat

My latest bulk second hand book raid. A 4 volume history of the Plantagenets from Henry II to Richard III. I'd never heard of Thomas B Costain previously. Seems a very readable series aimed at the general reader.

Yesterday I found myself south of the river in London or, as She Who Must Be Obeyed says, abroad. I went slightly overboard on the historical fiction purchases and discovered a bee resting in the library on my return. A bee of good taste! 📚 🐝 📚 Happy Easter! 🐣 #histbookchat
@navalairhistory.com enjoyed the book. History I was vaguely aware of but not the details. It all adds to the picture. #histbookchat
Just started this one last night before bed. Looks interesting!!

#histbookchat. Dipped into this book. The Vietnam War is my OG military history love. And this is as close as I get to social history of the war. Anyway. The ‘More Flags’ campaign gets a mention, I was familiar with it. It was a smidge more successful than Trump’s latest tirades against NATO.
A book on the Stuart pretenders anyone? Another charity shop find for the Easter weekend. 🤴 🌊 🇬🇧 #histbookchat
#histbookchat excellent book. It is really enlightening about the quieter Vietnam protest movement. Published by New South so readily available in Australia.
Currently #Reading: Eye Corps by Jack Walker.
So, I'm not very far into the book yet but there's something about it that reminds me so much of Andrew Finlayson's Killer Kane (Scottish/Irish background, Recon, White house duty after).
We'll see how it goes.

to slog through but there are some really interesting bits from a variety of perspectives that make me glad I pushed through and read both.
These are books 12 and 13 that I've read this year, and I have NO idea what i'm going to read next!

Book cover of "Goliath: The 100-year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy" by Stoller, Matt.
Text snippet from the book, "Goliath": "Shortly after Roosevelt called for fifty thousand planes a year, Reynolds went to see Arthur Davis of Alcoa. To Reynolds, Davis seemed as complacent about America's aluminum supply as Levelle had been about French needs. Germany would soon be able to make much more aluminum than the U.S., noted Reynolds. Perhaps Davis should ask the government to finance the buildup of capacity, to match the billion-pound-a-year capacity of the Nazis. Davis, who felt it a burden to accept funds from the government, said Reynolds was "unnecessarily alarmed." There would be no shortage.99 Davis's prediction proved laughable. In November of 1940, the Northrop Aircraft Company cut hours by 20 percent due to a metal shortage. By May 1941, work on bombers by one of the more prom-ising American aerospace companies, Boeing, had ceased because of inadequate aluminum supplies. 100 Congress reacted angrily. Senator Joseph O'Mahoney attacked Alcoa for delaying the manufacture of warplanes by "keeping supplies down in order to keep prices up." while adding that the chemical, iron and steel, metal, electric, and ship-ping cartels had "all played their part in the growth of Hitler's power." Whether the ongoing antitrust suit was decided for or against Alcoa, he said, 'it is clear that the manufacture of American airplanes needed to fill our own and British orders has been seriously delayed because parts manufacturers have been unable to get a sufficient amount of aluminum to fill their orders.'"

This week's reading is about the struggle in the #US between the forces for #democracy and monopolistic #capitalism for control over government. See the text image from the book for an example of how this affected #WW2 military production.
#histbookchat offering for Friday. As recommended by Katja Hoyer. Just started it. Nevertheless it’s extraordinary how the events and places in this book cast a long shadow into the C20th.
#HistBookChat offering for this week. I'm only about a quarter of the way in so far but it's going great so I don't think it'll go unfinished. It's a sad but inevitable thought that as the years pass, first hand accounts from the veterans will cease as the years catch up with them.

Just finished this book. A good, general overview of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. 3.5 stars and recommended. The last of these photos is one I took when I was in Warsaw in 2009 of one of the few former ghetto buildings that survived.
