I've been segment hiking the Ice Age Trail, which runs about 1200 miles across Wisconsin, following the glacial retreat across the state. This segment was mostly a connecting route on road, but the skies delivered!

Here I'm hiking up and onto an esker, common along the IAT. They were formed when the glacier melted, dropping what had been stream beds comprised of rocks, gravel, and sand, on the tops of or through the glaciers. So they're basically upside down stream beds.

Nice kettle pond along the Ice Age Trail. There are lots of these in the Kettle Moraine. This one is right in the middle of the city of West Bend, Wisconsin. Got in about 4 miles today.

What a beautiful day here in SE Wisconsin! 62 F (17 C) and sunny. After several warm days the snow is mostly gone. I got in about 4 miles on the IAT thru West Bend. You would never know you're walking thru a city of 32,000 people. Very nice section of trail!

Today I got a better look at Holy Hill. This pic is from the IAT, which travels 2.5 miles thru church property. That made my yo-yo hike 5 miles and took 3 hours on snow covered trail over some steep hills. And I saw 6 deer. :-)

When the sun gets down into the trees, its time to head back, or I'll be caught in the woods in the dark. Fine if I had my hammock and tarp along, but I don't. And it got down to about 15 F overnight. This was yesterday on the Kettlebowl Segment of the Ice Age Trail, WI.

My hike today at Polk Kames forest preserve included a nice walk through a beautiful stand of white birch. Sunny, temp of 45 F, crunching through the dry leaves. Gotta love it!
