**You’ve likely heard that the Rust-based version ofsudo shows password feedback by default in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, upending nearly 40 years of learned (and confusing) behaviour.** Broadly, that decision has been well received, but those who want a quick option to temporarily mask their sudo input (no asterisks), just got one. In the latest update to `sudo-rs` in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, you can toggle sudo password feedback visibility by pressing the `tab` key. You can press that at any point during password entry (before you start or mid-way through, it doesn’t matter). Once you do, rather than asterisks appearing, a `(no-echo)` mask is shown, obscuring input. Here’s a video of showing the differences between the two approaches in action: Default (visible) behaviour first, then `no-echo` as I press TAB The lack of visible feedback during sudo password input was a recurring point of confusion (some might say a rite of passage) for Linux newbies, who’d assume they did something wrong – or their Bluetooth keyboard connection had dropped out. Sudo used silent feedback as an intentional security feature, since showing asterisks for your password reveals its length to anyone who might be gawping over your shoulder. If they know you well enough, they might recall you saying `password1` was your nickname at school… While sudo-rs opts to show feedback by default, it is still possible to enable the old, invisible behaviour through a simple `sudoers` file edit. But the addition of a keyboard shortcut, added in a patch to the latest upload of `sudo-rs` in 26.04, offers an in-between approach: visible by default, hidden on demand. Ubuntu’s switch to sudo-rs doesn’t change the command: you still run `sudo`. When sudo prompts for your system password, you can type and see asterisks, or press your tab key to temporarily enter ‘no echo’ mode, and thus thwart any tech-minded miscreants indulging in a spot of shoulder-snooping as you work. This flexible ‘no echo’ mode was pitched as an ‘escape hatch’ for security-conscious, and the ensuing code patch ensures that sudo-rs won’t interpret a tab key press as a character input during password entry itself. All changes to sudo behaviour mentioned here do not affect Ubuntu 25.10, which was the first version to ship a Rust-based version of sudo. The new behaviour is available to use in latest version of `sudo-rs`, uploaded to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS this week. If you installed the recent beta release (or an earlier snapshot or daily build), then keep an eye out for it in the _Software Updater_ or `apt`.

Raising the recommended RAM requirements is not because the _Resolute Raccoon_ requires more resources than before, not directly – this is not a 2GB RAM jump solely to load the OS and nothing else. Rather, it’s more of an honesty bump. Components that make up the distro – the GNOME desktop and extensions, modern web browsers (and the sites we load in them) and the kinds of apps we use (and keep running) whilst multitasking are more demanding. The recommendation – which is a soft one, see below – is not because Ubuntu requires 2GB more memory than it did, but more the way we compute does. The _Resolute_ _Raccoon_ ‘s memory requirements better reflect real-world multitasking. ### Can still be installed on less than 6 GB Ubuntu 26.04 LTS can be installed on devices with less than 6GB RAM (but not less than 25GB of disk space). The experience may not be _as_ smooth or _as_ responsive as developers intend (so you don’t get to complain), but it _will_ work. I installed Ubuntu 26.04 Beta on a laptop with just 2 GB of memory – slow to the point of frustration in use, but otherwise functional. If you have a device with 4 GB RAM and you can’t upgrade (soldered memory is a thing, and e-waste can be avoided), then alternatives exist. Many Ubuntu flavours, like _Lubuntu_ , have lower system requirements than the main edition. Plus, there’s always the manual option using the Ubuntu netboot installer to install a base system and then built out a more minimal system from there. Requirements for Ubuntu Server 26.04 LTS are lower, but depend on use case. The main ISO can be installed on systems with a little as 1.5 GB RAM and 5 GB of hard drive space, with cloud images requiring less: 1GB and 4GB disk space. 1. **If you’re used to accessing your Google Drive in the _Nautilus_ file manager, a heads-up that the feature is no longer available in GNOME 50, which is the desktop version the upcoming Ubuntu 26.04 LTS uses.** While _GNOME_ _Online Accounts_ (GOA) integration continues to allow you to sign in to your Google account to enable supported apps to access your contacts, mail and calendar data securely, the toggle to give access to files is now gone. It’s that toggle that allows you to remotely mount your Google Drive in _Nautilus’_ sidebar. The Ubuntu 26.04 LTS beta may show a _Files_ toggle, but the feature itself won’t work. If you try to open your Google Drive in Nautilus after enabling it via GOA, you will see an “Unable to access…” account error. A set of package updates for GOA are rolling out to Ubuntu 26.04 development builds which disable the toggle. ### Why does GNOME 50 doesn’t support Google Drive GNOME developer Emmanuele Bassi has confirmed the feature is “no longer supported” on the GNOME Discourse forum, and explains why. GNOME’s Google Drive access relies on `libgdata`, a library that acts as a communication bridge between GNOME apps and Google APIs. But it’s had no active maintainer for nearly four years. In December 2022, GNOME’s Michael Catanzaro posted a public call for volunteers to take over the maintenance of libgdata. In his call he warned that, if nobody did, integrations that rely on it may eventually stop working. Nobody stepped up. GVFS, the virtual filesystem layer that gives GNOME apps (like _Nautilus_) access to remote storage backends (like Google Drive), dropped its libgdata dependency last year, noting it’s “unmaintained and the only thing keeping `libsoup2` in GNOME”. And libsoup2? Unmaintained, and full of security vulnerabilities. ### Alternative approaches are available Feature still works in older versions, like on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS If you plan on upgrading to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, it’s worth being aware of this deprecation. With no native Google Drive app for Linux, integrations like this have been ‘the next best thing’, especially being available in GNOME directly. Bassi did suggest those who wish to restore Google Drive functionality in a future update should reach out to the GVFS maintainer, but Catanzaro has said this would require a fork of libgdata as the project has now been archived. **Ubuntu MATE is looking for new a maintainer, as project lead Martin Wimpress says he no longer has the ‘passion’ for the project he once had (nor the time).** Wimpress created Ubuntu MATE back in 2014, pairing Ubuntu with the traditional MATE desktop created as fork of the old GNOME 2 codebase (now very much its own thing). Ubuntu MATE was made an _official_ Ubuntu flavour in 2015, and its first _official_ long-term support (LTS) release arrived the following year – but there won’t be an Ubuntu MATE 26.04 LTS release as it did not apply for LTS qualification1. A non-LTS will be released and, arguably, the practical differences of that for fans of the distro will depend on what they expect: the desktop will work and receive underlying updates for the duration of the LTS cycle, but not the MATE packages themselves. _“As another development cycle passes, I find myself lacking the time I once had to work on Ubuntu MATE. And, to be frank, I don’t have the passion for the project that I once had. When I have time to tinker, my interests are elsewhere”,_ Wimpress writes. _“With that in mind, I’m interested in handing over the reins to contributors who do have the time and energy to work on Ubuntu MATE”._ Ubuntu MATE is not the only Ubuntu flavour to be low on contributors. Lubuntu, per its devs, is ‘effectively in maintenance mode’, while Ubuntu Unity is bootstrapping under new leadership following the departure of its creator. Unlike the regular version of Ubuntu, its flavours are run by volunteers who work, largely, for free, fuelled by nothing than motivation. A lack of contributors is something a lot of free software projects suffer from – alas, demands and grumbles from their users is not. Maintaining an Ubuntu flavour takes a lot. It’s not just the “fun” aspect of curating packages and applying some themes. There’s upstream code to track, test and package; Ubuntu’s quality standards to maintain; cross-flavour meeting and schedules, and a degree of development expertise needed to identify, fix and triage bugs in a timely fashion, and pay due diligence to security. And that’s before you add in documentation, translations, the occasional bit of politics and inter-team management, and needing to keep your flavour’s community of users engaged and involved. There’s a saying about ‘seeing how the sausage gets made’ – in this case, how the flavour is added. Anyone who thinks they have the time, passion and skills (experience in maintaining packages in the Ubuntu archive is not something blind hope and a Claude Pro subscription can cover) can reach out to Martin Wimpress to get involved. Let’s hope Ubuntu MATE has plenty of friends (I know it’s a drink so the simile doesn’t work) who can step in to keep the friendly green flavour strong (better?) 1. The nature of LTS is in the name, and while flavours only commit to 3 years of timely fixes for their LTS users, it’s not a commitment they can or should make idly. Wimpress has done the right thing by the flavour’s users in not seeking (re)qualification. ↩︎

Trattandosi di una versione Long-Term Support (LTS), Ubuntu 26.04 riceverà aggiornamenti di sicurezza e correzioni critiche per cinque anni, fino ad **aprile 2031** , con la possibilità di estendere il supporto a dieci anni tramite un abbonamento Ubuntu Pro. ### Le principali novità tecnologiche Il cuore di “Resolute Raccoon” è caratterizzato da aggiornamenti significativi dei componenti core: * **Kernel Linux 7.0:** Introduce un supporto hardware esteso e nuove funzionalità di sistema. * **GNOME 50:** L’ambiente desktop si aggiorna portando con sé novità come il supporto per il Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), uno scaling migliorato per le app X11 legacy e nuovi controlli parentali. * **Grafica e Driver:** Sono inclusi i driver **Mesa 26** e le versioni più recenti dei driver NVIDIA (serie 590), insieme a pacchetti ottimizzati per carichi di lavoro AI come AMD ROCm e NVIDIA CUDA. ### Nuove Applicazioni e Restyling Visivo Ubuntu 26.04 introduce due nuove applicazioni predefinite per migliorare l’esperienza utente: 1. _**Resources**_ : Una nuova utility di monitoraggio del sistema che sostituisce i vecchi strumenti. 2. _**Showtime**_ : Un moderno lettore video, incluso nell’opzione di “installazione estesa”. Dal punto di vista estetico, gli utenti noteranno un set di **icone delle cartelle più colorate** , un **Ubuntu Dock non più trasparente** e una nuova animazione durante lo startup del sistema. Anche il tema Yaru è stato aggiornato con testi dell’interfaccia più marcati. ### Cambiamenti Sotto il Cofano Una delle modifiche più rilevanti riguarda la gestione dei pacchetti firmware del kernel, che sono stati suddivisi in **17 pacchetti specifici per produttore** anziché un unico pacchetto mastodontico; questo permette di risparmiare spazio su disco rimuovendo i driver per l’hardware non posseduto. Inoltre, l’utility “Software & Updates” non è più preinstallata, poiché la gestione dei pacchetti DEB è ora integrata direttamente nell’**App Center** (sperando che questa volta funzioni bene). Un’altra modifica importante riguarda la sicurezza: il sistema ora fornisce un feedback visivo (asterischi) quando si digita la password nel terminale tramite `sudo`. È importante notare che **GNOME ha rimosso il supporto per le sessioni X11/Xorg** native. ### Avvertenze per il Testing Essendo una versione **Beta** , “Resolute Raccoon” non è destinata all’uso quotidiano su macchine di produzione. I tester hanno già segnalato alcuni **bug** , tra cui problemi di spaziatura nella griglia delle icone delle app e crash improvvisi del Visualizzatore Documenti (_Papers_) quando si utilizzano i nuovi strumenti di annotazione. Se state utilizzando Ubuntu 24.04 LTS o 25.10, potrete aggiornare alla versione stabile di 26.04 una volta rilasciata, seguendo i canali ufficiali di aggiornamento. Se scegliete di installare la beta ora, potrete passare alla versione finale semplicemente installando i normali aggiornamenti software man mano che vengono rilasciati.
