For #ManuscriptMonday, we’re looking at a Liber de natura rerum, a type of medieval encyclopedia that aimed to describe and explain the natural world, often illustrated with detailed miniatures.
"Der naturen bloeme" is the earliest surviving example of this genre in Middle Dutch!

Painted 32mm scale miniature of a sadistic woman in a green gown and crespine (Phyllis the Great) riding an old bearded man in a gray cap and gown in red tights (the philosopher Aristotle). He is wearing a red bridle and she sports a matching flogger. Miniature sculpted by Familiar Craftsman.
The same scene as it was depicted in a manuscript sometime in the late 1200s.

For today's #ManuscriptMonday, we turn to a remarkable encounter depicted in a late fourteenth-century illuminated manuscript preserved at the Bibliothèque municipale in Lyon.
Manuscript page depicting a ladder that forks halfway up, one direction leading up to heaven, the other down to hell. Each rung is labelled with a bodily sense until the ladder forks, with the rungs then labelled with cardinal virtues and vices (leading to heaven and hell respectively).
