On April 3, 1948, President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948. It became known as the #MarshallPlan, named for Secretary of State George Marshall, who in 1947 proposed that the United States provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe.

The #MarshallPlan, ending #ThisDayInHistory in 1951, was not an altruistic effort to rebuild #Europe after #WWII. It worked to hamper #socialism (it forced recipients to weaken #unions & push leftists from coalitions) and to enrich US corporations (most aid was spent in the US).
