This movie is too good for Johnny to be a straightforward Christ metaphor. But it uses cultural biblical allusions skilfully, to wring every last bit of pathos out for its contemporary audience. I haven't been an altar boy for 50y and I get it.

There's an image system involving frayed and broken shoelaces: Kathleen mends Johnny's before he leaves, Shell loses his shoe.
It could be simple realism: laces could have been dear.
It could be another Gospel reference, the woman who annoints Christ's feet.

The revelation where Johnny preaches from 1 Corinthians mirrors the artist Lukey's dissatisfaction with his earlier work, but tells a tale of moral growth, instead: "I spoke as a child." I wonder if Johnny could have become a Gandhi, instead.
