First doodle in my new Moleskine sketchbook. Paying tribute to one of my favorite movies. There are plenty of errors and imperfections, but I still felt the need to persevere and finish the piece. #PerfectBlue #sketchbook #posca #practice #anime

Art and photo by Katherine Gingrich on April 4, 2026. All rights reserved.

You’re looking at a small, intimate art‑making moment laid out on a tabletop. Everything is close together, as if the artist has just paused mid‑stroke.

At the center is a small, square watercolor painting. It’s a vertical rectangle filled with horizontal bands of warm color that fade gently into one another. The top is a soft, glowing yellow. The middle is a deeper golden orange. The bottom is a warm sunset red. The colors feel like heat moving downward, or light sinking into warmth.

Along the right edge of the painted rectangle, five red circles march downward in a loose column. They vary in size—smallest near the top, largest near the bottom—like drifting bubbles or rising embers. Each circle is outlined in black ink, giving them a crisp, graphic feel against the watercolor softness.

The whole painting is edged with thin black ink lines and tiny hatch marks, adding texture you could imagine as faint scratches or stitched threads.

Above the painting, two pens rest horizontally. One is a Pigma Micron 003, a very fine‑tipped archival ink pen used for delicate linework. The other is a uni POSCA marker, black, thicker, used for bold strokes or solid outlines. Their presence tells you this piece mixes both precision and boldness.

To the right, there’s a watercolor palette labeled Schmincke—a metal tray with small rectangular pans of paint. The visible colors are mostly yellows, oranges, and greens, echoing the warm palette of the artwork. A red‑handled paintbrush lies across the palette, its bristles still slightly stained, as if recently dipped.

The scene feels warm, focused, and handmade—like catching an artist in the middle of exploring color and shape. The combination of soft watercolor gradients, crisp ink lines, and the tools scattered nearby gives the impression of a quiet, thoughtful creative moment.

Three inches by three inches.

I think I'm getting better grasp on posca markers, still I think I need to get the smaller version for finer details, plus paper that can hold up to them better.

Working on something new I'd like to start offering as commissions - illustrated card binders! Thus far I've been experimenting with Posca paint pens and using paintbrushes for texturing. Had to do my favorite 'mon ever as the testing subject.

You’re looking at a small, intimate art-making moment — the kind of scene that feels like someone paused mid‑creation, leaving all their tools within reach.

At the center lies a small square watercolor painting. The painting features a soft, organic shape, almost like a smooth pebble or a drifting cloud. Its interior is filled with blended washes of green, blue, and hints of purple, the colors melting into one another like wet ink spreading on cotton paper. The edges of the shape are outlined in fine black ink, giving it a crisp boundary against the white background.

Around this central shape, the artist has added tiny decorative marks — little dots, spirals, stars, and speckles. They’re drawn in yellow, blue, and metallic gold, giving the impression of playful energy radiating outward, like sparks or drifting pollen.

Above the painting rest several drawing tools: three thick Posca paint markers in green, yellow, and black — their caps bright and matte, and a very fine Micron 003 pen, the kind used for delicate linework.

To the right sits a watercolor palette with four shimmering Gansai Tambi colors labeled “Cosmic Red,” “Cosmic Olive,” “Cosmic Green,” and “Cosmic Blue.” The paints look slightly glossy, as if recently touched by water. A red-handled paintbrush lies across the palette, still damp, suggesting the artist has just set it down.

The whole scene feels warm, creative, and mid‑process — like someone is joyfully exploring color and line, letting intuition guide their hand.

I recently picked up the new Gansai Tambi Granulation colors 2 set. They are so beautiful I don’t want to doodle over them.
