Це один із початкових результатів роботи телескопа перед стартом його основної наукової програми, яка має кардинально змінити уявлення астрономів про малі тіла Сонячної системи. Відкриття було представлено в Центрі малих планет Міжнародного астрономічного союзу, який уже офіційно затвердив обʼєкти. Отримані дані містять приблизно мільйон спостережень, зроблених під час ранніх оптимізаційних тестів Обсерваторії. Серед обʼєктів – не лише нові астероїди, а й близько 80 тисяч відомих: чимало з останніх науковці вважали втраченими через невизначеність орбіти та неможливість передбачити рух; тепер же їхні траєкторії вдалося уточнити та покращити прогнозування. Крім того, учені відкрили 33 нові навколоземні обʼєкти (НЗО), які є невеликими астероїдами чи кометами, – найбільший має розмір 500 метрів. За словами науковців, жоден із НЗО не становить небезпеки для нашої планети. Однак вони наголошують – наразі відомо лише про 40% потенційно небезпечних обʼєктів діаметром більше 140 метрів. Тому подібні огляди неба та моніторинги вкрай важливі для планетарної безпеки. У каталозі даних опинилися й 380 нових транснептунових обʼєктів, або ТНО (для порівняння, за останні 30 років їх було відкрито 5000). Їхні траєкторії знаходяться далеко за орбітою восьмої планети, а деякі настільки витягнуті, що в тисячі разів перевищують дистанцію між Землею та Сонцем і потрапляють у список найвіддаленіших від нас відомих обʼєктів такого типу. Команда Обсерваторії зазначає, що з урахуванням частоти спостережень і для пошуку нових тіл потрібно було створити новітні, складні компʼютерні алгоритми – і вони працюють. «Перше світло» Вери Рубін, яке вона отримала в червні минулого року, дозволило виявити близько 2000 астероїдів. Вчені очікують, що після виходу на повну потужність і початку основної наукової місії за допомогою телескопа вдасться фіксувати з десяток тисяч обʼєктів кожні дві-три ночі. Це значно збільшить кількість відомих астероїдів, і серед них можуть бути близько 90 тисяч навколоземних обʼєктів, деякі з котрих потенційно загрожуватимуть Землі. Rubin Observatory sent scientists nearly 1 million astronomy alerts in one night, showing off changes in the sky. Eventually, the telescope is expected to reach 7 million alerts per night. The telescope, which scans the full sky from its perch atop Cerro Pachón mountain in Chile, produced the alerts to direct scientists to "new asteroids, exploding stars, and other changes in the night sky," representatives for the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) said in a statement. "Scientists will have a greater ability to catch supernovae in their earliest moments, discover and track asteroids to assess potential threats to Earth, and spot rare interstellar objects as they race through the solar system," NSF representatives wrote in the statement. Rubin's alert system is starting up shortly before the observatory begins a 10-year program, known as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), later this year. Rubin will do nightly sky scans to generate an image of the entire Southern Hemisphere sky every few nights, using the largest-ever digital camera to spot any changes in the view overhead. The observatory's debut images, released in June 2025, revealed more than 10 million galaxies in and around the Virgo Cluster
