Photo of an adult Black Crowned Night Heron in side profile.
On our first evening in Port Stanley we went out for a gentle walk, tired from 24+ hours travelling but keen to see what wildlife might be seen. The heron was feeding in the little Harbour opposite our hotel and we started photographing from far away slowly creeping up, keeping low, hiding behind posts.....until we were standing on the harbour wall next to it, fishing was far more important than being bothered by a couple of tourists.
In the photo the bird's yellow legs are just visible above the shallow sea it's fishing in. Its body is bent down, its head just below the horizontal and its beak just tipping the water in the process of being withdrawn. Its pale front and side and grey back and top of head and neck are reflected in the near still surface.
Black Crowned Night Heron doing some serious fishing, catching something every couple of minutes totally ignoring us creeping slowly and then just chatting 🤷♀️ as it didn't care😂
