In anticipation of moving back to the main QTH in a couple of weeks, I have put up a non resonant long wire. 36.270 metres of wire, inverted V over an Oak tree. Ran WSPR over the weekend, 1 watt. (I didn't bother to test or tune the antenna!) #WSPR #hamradio

Mix 61 ferrite rod is 4”x0.33”, has approx 60 turns 23AWG primary, & 2 turns 28AWG pickup coil. #NanoVNA gave me a mere 17dB dip on the target frequency. Antenna is taped to East-facing window, about 6’ above grade.
But TONIGHT’s test will be this 8”x0.33” rod. All else is the same, except with 2 rods glued together, reinforced with heat shrink, there’s more “aperture” to take in RF. Got a better match with this longer rod also… got NanoVNA to show my dip at -38dB. So I’m very hopeful about this next test.
Last night’s ferrite #MagLoop antenna test was a success, but barely. Got #WSPR decodes of only 1 station, <700km.

Close up photo of 4” ferrite (mix 61) rod, wrapped slightly loosely about 57 turns with 23AWG magnet wire. The pickup is 2 turns of 18AWG, & is halfway between the bottom end of the primary coil (oriented vertically), and the bottom end of the rod.
Photo not as close, so you can see the ferrite is scotch-taped to the window about 6’ off the floor/ground. The leads of the primary coil come off the right side of the rod, then extend about 3 feet to the desktop, then attach to the variable air capacitor. These leads run parallel to each other, kept about 3 inches apart by also being taped to the window.
Next ferrite rod loop RX #antenna test setup for #160meters has the ferrite rod taped to the window so that half the world isn’t blocked by the metal-cased ham gear on the workbench. Eager to see how #WSPR does overnight.

I’ve built this antenna several times, the past 2 times successfully. There are 2 differences from the previous to this one. This uses 18AWG, where the other was 34AWG. And because the bigger wire makes a bigger coil, I had to glue 2 rods together. It may be that a more interesting A/B test will be comparing the 2 ferrite rod antennas, to see how much better this one is.
Tonight’s (already running) A/B #HamRadio #antenna test is #160m #WSPR (RX only) between 6-80 #DXCommander vertical & this ferrite rod magnetic loop, indoors, on my bench.

The most distant reception of my #hamradio #WSPR signal I've noticed: transmitted from Oakland CA USA, it was heard 2025-10-26T01:22Z near Windhoek, Namibia, 15,815km away. (Receptions by station DP0GVN in Antarctica, 14,811km away, are more common.)
Picture of my wspr transmitter. It consists of 5 boards. The bottom board is the microcontroller. The second board has the Si5351 oscillator. The third board is an apropriate Low Pass Filter (LPF), the antenna hangs off of that board. The top board allows the GPS module to connect. It's kind of messy as I was trying various ways to power it. Right now I just have a temporary power solution.

I left my radio txing running overnight on #WSPR and geeked-out this morning seeing it had been heard with only ten watts in Antarctica! DPØGVN is a club station located at the German Antarctic Research Station "Neumayer III" in Dronning Maud Land. www.qrz.com/db/DP0GVN

Been playing with 160m WSPR rx over the couple of weeks generally hearing VK so really pleased to hear E51WL this evening.
Using a funcube dongle SDR and the wsjtx software on a Linux machine. The antenna is a 4m high 22m long wire with radials and a 4 to 1 balun.
