Photo showing part of a colony of Sandwich Terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis) at their nesting site on a small island with grass and low herbage. There are around two dozen birds in this image, most out-of-focus in the background, with one in flight and the others at rest on the ground. The Terns are Gull-like, with bodies which are mostly white, with grey on the upper parts of their wings, black caps (which are shaggy at the back), and long, black beaks which have yellow, pointed tips. The legs and feet, visible on the flying bird, are small, and black in colour.
A Sandwich Tern flying over this species’ breeding colony at Cemlyn, #Anglesey, in June 2024, for today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme #SmallBirdsInFlight. The first of this year’s birds are already back at Cemlyn and numbers will grow over the coming weeks. #Birds #BirdPhotography #UKWildlife #EKC 🌿
