I’m taking the bark off in roughly 1/4-inch strips, slicing through the outer bark and inner bark (cambium). At this time of year the sap has risen, and if the wood has recently been cut, the bark peels pretty easily.
Now the trick is to peel the cambium from the outer bark. It takes a bit of practice to keep the peel from running out on either side.
The final strips have roughly the feel of a heavy kraft paper. It needs to be a bit damp for working, but not soaking wet. Too dry and it gets brittle and tears. The objective is to keep the wood fibers unbroken to provide as much strength as possible.
Just a view views of processing wood bark for cordage. There are many ways of working it and I do not profess to be an expert in any way. I have yet to try boiling in wood ash (lye) to soften and separate the fibers, but I’ll need to try that at some point. #cordage #bushcraft
