We're excited to get practicing and to start sharing some of these skills on our own community projects! Have you ever tried #cordage or #nalbinding? Any top tips?
Thanks to the The National Lottery Heritage Fund for supporting our #peatlandprogress project, enabling us to learn valuable new skills!

The most wonderful day immersed in prehistoric textiles! Sally Pointer guided us through the history of cloth making, local plants to use and how to transform them into #cordage. We began #nalbinding (needle-binding), an endangered #heritagecraft, and made our own needles from antlers and flint!

Did you ever try to peel a really green banana? And then the peel broke apart and there were all these fibres inside? And then you thought “I bet I could twine cordage out of that?”
Yeah, me, neither. 😳

I'm trying to learn willow basketry, and this material is kicking my ass. Had to retreat to the comfort of twining softer materials. This is daylily leaf, gifted to me by a friend, and it's delightful to work with. I think I need to make a hat.

I’m taking the bark off in roughly 1/4-inch strips, slicing through the outer bark and inner bark (cambium). At this time of year the sap has risen, and if the wood has recently been cut, the bark peels pretty easily.

Now the trick is to peel the cambium from the outer bark. It takes a bit of practice to keep the peel from running out on either side.

The final strips have roughly the feel of a heavy kraft paper. It needs to be a bit damp for working, but not soaking wet. Too dry and it gets brittle and tears. The objective is to keep the wood fibers unbroken to provide as much strength as possible.

Just a view views of processing wood bark for cordage. There are many ways of working it and I do not profess to be an expert in any way. I have yet to try boiling in wood ash (lye) to soften and separate the fibers, but I’ll need to try that at some point. #cordage #bushcraft

Two examples of cordage made from the underbark of trees. On the left is a hank of cord made from Autumn Olive; it’s dark brown. On the right is cord made from Serviceberry bark. It is a light tan color.

Today was playing with cordage again. This time I tried it with bark from Serviceberry, a native shrub/tree here in Virginia and one of my favorite woods for carving. The new cord feel sturdier, but we’ll compare the two after the new stuff has dried out. #woodworking #bushcraft #cordage

This morning’s product: about 10 feet of two-strand Autumn Olive bark cord. Mostly a light brown or tan in color, with some flecks of green and gray. Still kinda ragged in places, but I’m slowly getting more consistency. Think I need to make/buy a strap cutter for more consistent width of the strips.

My objective in making cordage is for broom bindings. For the bark I’m using, I’ve found 2-strand twisted cord, braided into 3-strand flat braid, results in something strong enough for a binding. Not real pretty, but stronger than just a straight twist.

I’m using the inner bark of the Autumn Olive, which is an invasive shrub here in Virginia. I make parallel cuts 1/4 to 3/8 inches apart and then peel it from the branch. I then remove the dead outer bark, leaving a pliable strip.

My attempts at making cordage (rope) from plant fiber are improving. The breakthrough was switching to the inner bark of Autumn Olive. It’s tougher than the grasses I had been using and is easier to produce in more of uniform strips. Still ragged, but improving. Thanks JYF for teaching. #cordage
