U.S. EPA announces action on microplastics, but Michigan critics say it's not enough The federal government announced a new $144 million program to study microplastics and the risks they pose to human health. But some environmental groups say the action isn't aggressive enough.

The #US #EPA announced that it will designate #microplastics as contaminants of concern and will allocate funds to microplastics research. The new designations do not take any steps towards monitoring microplastic levels in #drinkingwater.

EPA recently added microplastics & pharmaceuticals to the drinking water Contaminant Candidate List as priorities for research, with no binding rules yet. Most treatment plants weren’t built to remove either. Despite this action, real protection may be years away.
