Severe Tropical Cyclone #Maila remains over the Solomon Sea & has begun slowly drifting westward. A slow west to west-southwest track is likely over the next few days. Maila is expected to impact the Cape York Peninsula in northern #Queensland early next week.
The active Pacific is primed for a westerly wind burst that will likely kickstart a strong El Niño event later this spring. Inflow associated with a developing tropical depression in the WPAC and Cyclone #Maila (30P) will drive super warm waters in the equatorial Pacific eastward.

On that note, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology has upgraded #Maila / #30P to Cat 5 on their intensity scale (115 kts 10-min). Maila is the first Cat 5 severe tropical cyclone on record in the Solomon Sea, and it could bring extremely dangerous conditions to parts of Papua New Guinea on Thursday.
Tropical Cyclone #Maila ( #30P) is in truly uncharted territory, as the 1-minute intensity was increased to 125 kts at 1800 UTC. Maila is by far the most intense tropical cyclone on record in the Solomon Sea, and it has managed to strengthen despite being nearly stationary.

Cyclone #Maila has become the STRONGEST STORM in RECORDEST HISTORY in the Solomon Sea as it has made it to Category 3 MAJOR #CYCLONE status. The forecast calls for even more strengthening into a Category 4 near Papua New Guinea!

#Maila ( #30P) is strengthening again and will affect Papua New Guinea on Thursday. It could reach Cat 5 (AUS) strength before then.
#Vaianu ( #31P) is moving away from #Fiji and will become extratropical by Friday. It will bring dangerous conditions to New Zealand this weekend.
A cyclone has been trapped in the Solomon Sea for several days now 🌀
As it stays locked over warm waters, Cyclone #Maila gathers strength. It will eventually escape in a day or two, tracking toward Australia’s Cape York Peninsula.

With sustained winds over 100 mph, Cyclone #Maila remains unusually strong for a cyclone located between the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. A slow westwards movement is expected in the next couple of days.

There are two nearly-identical storms centered just 1300 miles apart in the South Pacific. #Maila is near the Solomon Islands and #Vaianu is near Fiji.
I just started a radar loop for Vaianu from Nadi, Fiji. You can find that in the usual spot... this is the 618th radar loop in that archive.
Cyclones #Maila ( #30P) and #Vaianu ( #31P) continue to churn in the SWPAC.
Maila is starting to level off but will impact PNG's Milne Bay Province w/hurricane force winds by midweek. TC impacts are rare there.
Vaianu will pass west of #Fiji and SW of #Tonga but could bring gale force winds.
