'Act now': Kiwis warned 'later could be too late' as Cyclone Vaianu advances Strong winds are also expected to build to severe gale force in exposed parts of the North Island. Winds are forecast to initially blow from the east to southeast before swinging southwesterly as the cyclone moves south. The National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) is warning Kiwis to “act now” as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu heads for New Zealand. MetService modelling shows Vaianu bringing heavy rain and extremely strong winds to parts of the country on Friday and Saturday, with red severe weather warnings possible. Nema director of civil defence emergency management John Price said people should start preparing now before the storm arrives, as “later could be too late”. “If you can, make sure drains around your property are clear of waste and debris, and bring inside or tie down anything that strong winds could break or pick up,” he said. “Trust your danger sense and don’t wait for official warnings. Do not enter floodwaters as they are dangerous and can kill you.” Price said landslides were an “almost certainty” in some areas, with the ground already saturated after recent heavy rain. “Watch for warning signs like small slips or rockfalls, water flowing out of a slope, trees or fences that...

Cyclone Vaianu moves away from Fiji, but heavy rain warning remains in force Severe Tropical Cyclone Vaianu is currently moving away from Fiji, the country's weather office says. Vaianu, a Category 3 system, battered Fiji with heavy rain and winds and caused widespread flooding across the country. "By 3:00pm today, it is forecast to be located about 410km south of Kadavu and 510km south of Suva. While the cyclone is tracking away, associated weather conditions continue to affect parts of the country," the Fiji Meteorological Service stated in an update on Wednesday morning. The Fiji Metservice said a heavy rain warning remains in force for the entire Fiji group. Several roads and crossings were cut off, schools and universities were closed, flights cancelled, and non-essential government workers were sent home on Tuesday. The country's National Disaster Risk Management Office confirmed almost 300 people were in evacuation centres set up across the Western, Eastern and Central divisions as of 7pm last night. fijivillage.com reports Vaianu continues to impact road networks with a number of crossings and roads in the Western and Central divisions either closed, restricted, or affected by flooding, fallen trees, and overslips. The Fiji Roads Authority is advising motorists to exercise caution while travelling due to obstructions caused by fallen trees. It...

Cyclone Vaianu to reach NZ waters tonight, all North Island under alert as plans begin for storm “It’s unwelcome news for the areas recently affected by bad weather ... just recently, at the start of the year and of course Cyclone Gabrielle and other floods.” All eyes are on Northland and the upper North Island as the cyclone is expected to reach the top of the country by Saturday. Speaking to the media this afternoon, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon acknowledged Cyclone Vaianu. “It’ll likely have a big impact on the North Island, particularly on Sunday. “We’re encouraging people to stock up, get supplies and tie things down.” He said emergency agencies are on full notice and have prepared for it. “It’s important we use the time we’ve got to make sure people are prepared at homes and households.” Penk told the Herald the potential scale of the storm is “beyond the recent experience coastal and rural communities have recently had”. “We advise people take reasonable steps and precaution, as has the Government. We aren’t taking this lightly. “If it isn’t as bad as we think that’s obviously good ... but it’s best to anticipate the worst in this situation.” Metservice has reported on its website that if the cyclone does move across the North Island as expected,...

'Hanging by a thread': Cyclone Vaianu threat piles pressure on battered Northland “ ... We’ve got to be saying to ourselves that the northeast region is hanging by a thread, isn’t it?” Couper said a concern was the impact another significant weather event would have on Kaiikanui Rd, which is the only detour available linking Whangārei to Whangaruru’s coastal communities cut off by the Helena Bay landslip. “They’re starting to feel the strain and are concerned about what’s coming,” Couper said. Flooding from yesterday’s heavy rain closed Kaiikanui Rd and halted work on the slip that still blocks Russell Rd. Those coastal communities weren’t the only ones playing on the mayor’s mind. Couper felt for farmers at Hikurangi as well, whose land has been underwater twice this year in separate weather events. “ ... It’s not been an easy life for some people, not an easy summer.” Whangārei District Council was keeping a close eye on weather reports about Cyclone Vaianu. Couper said it was too early to say what they would do and when, but the council wanted to be prepared. South Hokianga residents still mopping up from the March 26 deluge were anxious about what was to come. Whirinaki in South Hokianga was among the Far North communities badly hit,...

Weather: Orange heavy rain warning for Northland, MetService monitoring tropical cyclone Vaianu People in Tauranga feeling unsafe when heavy rain bears down on the city are being urged to evacuate. The Bay of Plenty west of Whakatane is now under an orange heavy rain warning, with up to 140mm forecast from midnight. Tauranga City Council has closed a number of tracks and parks in preparation. It said there was an increased risk of both new landslides and more damage at old ones after earlier severe weather. The council said residents should get to other ground immediately if they learn, or suspect, a landslide is happening. Northland warnings downgraded Elsewhere, heavy rain continued to batter Northland's east coast, with the Kāeo River threatening to flood across State Highway 10 north of the Bay of Islands. High tide passed at 11am. The wettest areas so far have been Kerikeri, Whakapara and Whangaroa, which have each recorded around 80mm of rain in the past 24 hours. MetService earlier warned up to 120mm could fall, with peak rates up to 40mm an hour. In Punaruku, the area battered by the January storm, just over 50mm had fallen. There were no reported power outages or highway closures, but Civil Defence was urging motorists to take extreme care...

150km/h winds: Tropical Cyclone Vaianu now category 3 Forecasters say it is too early to lock in a definite path for Vaianu, other than it is currently tracking to directly hit Northland and Auckland, with the brunt of the weather forecast for Sunday. The cyclone is expected to deliver strong winds, large swells and heavy rain. MetService reported its forecast to move southeastwards across the North Island towards East Cape by midnight Sunday, bringing harsh rain to much of the north and strong winds to Manawatū and Tararua districts. “For the North Island from the Tararua District and Manawatū northwards, there is moderate confidence winds will rise to severe gale in exposed places. Winds are initially forecast to blow from the east to southeast and are followed by southwesterlies as Cyclone Vaianu moves southwards,” the weather agency said. “In addition, a front is expected to move northwards over southern New Zealand, while weakening.” MetService has forecast 8m swells from 1am Sunday, mainly in the east of the Far North, making their way down the east of the country and easing off around Gisborne by Monday afternoon. Far North District Council has set up recovery hubs across the region to provide support to locals affected by recent severe weather,...

Cyclone Vaianu: Roads cut off, schools closed, flights cancelled in Fiji Dozens of roads and crossings are inaccessible in Fiji's Western Division due to heavy rainfall caused by severe tropical cyclone Vaianu. Authorities are advising people to avoid flooded areas and take necessary precautions. Videos shared by the Fiji Meteorological Service - sent by the public - showing real-time weather updates of the impacts of Vaianu show rain and strong winds affecting different parts of the country. Vaianu is not expected to make landfall in Fiji. A forecasting officer said on Tuesday morning the wind is expected to pick up over most places on Tuesday. Forecasting officer Shivneel Prasad said some marine areas can expect wind up to 40 knots and gusts of up to 50 knots, or about 93 kilometres an hour, which means hazardous conditions at sea. "For land, basically we expect the northerly winds to prevail over the Fiji Group. This will bring about... occasional periods of rain and heavy falls as well." He said the Metservice had received reports of flash flooding. Prasad said Vaianu is expected to stay on its projected south-east path, and weather conditions will continue to affect Fiji on Wednesday but should start to ease. "Come tomorrow morning we'll start to see a...
