And finally: you’re supporting a small business. It’s no secret that GenAI companies are owned by billionaires who do not have your best interests (or privacy) at heart. I truly want to see writers succeed. Any money you spend directly supports a small, female-, neurodivergent-owned business. This impacts my family much more than it would a billionaire, and enables me to continue doing my dream job of supporting writers.
Don’t let AI destroy your unique voice (and the planet). Hire me, a real human editor. Not ready to hire an editor? Follow me for tips and writing advice.
Hire me, a real human editor! I know it may be tempting to have AI edit your novel, but here’s all the reasons why it’s better to work with an editor (of the human variety). 3/3
#freelanceeditor #writingcommunity #amediting #querytrenches
I can guarantee confidentiality. GenAI companies have already settled lawsuits against writers for scraping their words without permission to train their models. My clients sign a contract that guarantees confidentiality and that I have no rights to their intellectual property.
AI only focuses on the question. The reason your query needs to be detailed and well worded is because that’s the only thing it focuses on. I’m also going to focus on why a writer is asking that question and why they approached that question in a particular way.
AI can’t offer video calls. Some writers like to have live discovery calls or post-edit meetings. This is all part of the interpersonal relationship to get a feel for how we’d work together, and to help writers debrief after getting their edit back.
I have a network; AI doesn’t. After 15 years in the industry I have a network of peers in publishing, editorial, marketing, and communications. I can leverage that network to help provide information on the industry and help you with marketing strategy. If your genre isn’t one I work with, I can refer you to a colleague.

The benefits of working with a human editor: what I can provide that AI can’t.
I’m not just providing a service. It’s an interpersonal relationship built on trust & mutual understanding. My extensive edit letter isn’t only going to help you revise the novel you hired me for, but will help you improve your craft and confidence in your ability for future novels. I’m a coach and mentor, offering encouragement, motivation, and constrcutive criticism. I center the client and support my writer’s goals. I’m focused on the editorial needs of the writer, not just the writing.
AI can’t be a sensitivity reader. AI does not have lived experience. I can immediately pick up on nuances that a computer just can’t. Is the tone off? Is your joke landing? What about the minute movements of facial expressions and what they mean? I bring ethical judgment and subjectivity in an emotionally intelligent way.
AI does not know the rules of your niche. Certain genres follow rules and structure guidelines. Does AI know that romance novels should end with a HEA/HFN, and that cheating is frowned upon? What about the rules of magic systems in fantasy? I understand these intricacies, and the changing desires of the publishing industry.

Search agents by genre and more See their reply/request rates Check comments for red flags Find their links/submission guidelines The free version is robust, but $25 per year for premium is worth it when you’ll be querying! QueryTracker Find agents’ manuscript wish list to reference why they’re a fit for you in your query letter Take courses, get query critiques & more through the Manuscript Academy MSWL Look up EVERY agent you query to find how many deals they’ve had in past year (if any), if they’re in your genre, what they’re selling to whom Not free, but you could split cost or sign up for a few months Publishers Marketplace Bonus: Bluesky replaced Twitter when it comes to pitch contests. Try your hand at it and follow agents for MSWL! Also find critique partners/other writers in #writingcommunity
ollow guidelines (and other tips) Follow any & all guidelines for querying on an agent’s website Know your comp titles. What books/shows/movies of the past 5 years is your book similar to? Where would it sit in the bookstore? Know how to market yourself! Send queries in batches of 6-10 so you can incorporate any feedback received. Only send to agents you’d want to work with! Read widely. Not just in your genre! It’s so important to know what the market is, and it’s so helpful to your own craft. Personalize your queries. Don’t send a query that says “dear agent.” The body can be the same but the intro should show why you’re querying that particular agent.
ther things to remember Know the standard word count for your genre. Ex: generally (for a debut) a romance should sit between 70-90k You can write in a vacuum but don’t edit in one. Find your community, have AT LEAST one critique partner & beta reader read your work before submitting. Your novel is ready to query when it’s as good as you & your CP can make it. DO NOT send queries until the book is completely finished. They can ask for a full request immediately and it’s not a good first impression to say I don’t have it... Don’t use AI for any part of your query package. Agents ask on querymanager submissions forms now. Seriously, don’t do it. Remember that the main part of an agent’s job is taking care of their existing clients, so you may need to wait a while. Also agents SHOULD NEVER charge you for anything
I provide query submissions package reviews on one or all of the following: query letter, 1-2 page synopsis, opening pages, and a 1-2 sentence pitch. Learn more at revisionroom.net and follow for more! And, remember: you got this! Good luck out there, it only takes one yes. ow I can help
Heading into the query trenches and not sure where to start? I can help! I know it’s tough but here’s some resources and important things to remember. Let me know if you have any questions.

She saw herself how he soured on the counter. might: melted ice cream. Burnt toast. Something SHAMELESSLY WANTING Frankie Joy
His eyes crinkled, the left side of his mouth lifting higher than the right. His laugh washed over her like cherry-cola. Cloying, but in a good way, fizzy on the edges. SHAMELESSLY WANTING Frankie Joy
Emotion swirled in her chest -nauseous, ridiculous, nowhere to go. Tacky between her teeth like the gummy bears stashed in her dresser. SHAMELESSLY WANTING Frankie Joy
His eyes crackled, sharp and sweet, like pop rocks on her tongue. SHAMELESSLY WANTING Frankie Joy
Bea processes with candy 🍬 Gummy bears account for 90% of her diet until her best friend brings her pizza and her not-boyfriend-boss surprises her with a not-date on the library floor.
