What is Sextortion? Sextortion (a portmanteau of "sex" and "extortion") is a serious form of blackmail and online exploitation. It occurs when someone threatens to distribute, share, or expose sexually explicit images, videos, or other intimate/compromising material of a person unless the victim complies with specific demands. The demands typically include: Sending additional nude or sexually explicit images/videos Performing sexual acts (often on camera) Paying money (increasingly common in "financially motivated sextortion") Providing other favors or content Common Scenarios and Tactics Perpetrators (often called online predators or scammers) usually obtain the material through: Grooming — Building trust online (via social media, dating apps, gaming platforms, video chats, etc.), tricking the victim into sharing explicit content. Deception — Pretending to be someone else (e.g., a peer, romantic interest, or authority figure). Hacking/malware — Claiming (sometimes falsely) to have hacked the victim's device, webcam, or accounts. AI/deepfakes — In newer cases, using or threatening AI-generated fake nude images. Sexting gone wrong — The victim shares content consensually at first, but the other party later turns coercive. Threats often escalate with claims like "I'll send this to your friends/family/school/employer" or "I know where you live." Many cases target children, teens, and young adults, but adults can also be victimized. Two Main Types Often Distinguished Traditional/"sexual" sextortion — Primarily motivated by obtaining more sexual content for the perpetrator's gratification. Financially motivated sextortion — Focused on extorting money (often via cryptocurrency, gift cards, etc.), increasingly reported in recent years. Authorities like the FBI, NCMEC (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children), and international agencies classify sextortion as a form of child sexual exploitation when minors are involved, and it has seen sharp increases in reported cases. It is a criminal act in most jurisdictions, often falling under laws related to extortion, blackmail, child exploitation, non-consensual image distribution, and computer fraud/hacking. If you or someone you know is being targeted, do not pay or comply — scammers/predators rarely stop and often escalate. Instead, immediately report to authorities (e.g., FBI tips at tips.fbi.gov, local law enforcement, CyberTipline at missingkids.org), preserve evidence, and seek support. Many victims feel intense shame, but the fault lies entirely with the perpetrator.
