A beautiful large sea hare, close-up as it emerges over a rocky, algae-covered shelf into brighter sunlight. Brilliantly camouflaged, it blends in well with the reef. The lower half of the image contains swatches of its colour palette.

I love these beautiful derps. Sydney sea hares (Aplysia) tend to be brilliantly camouflaged, matching their temperate rocky reef habitat. One of the more subtle palettes in the R colour package.

Changing it up today. I believe this is a common buckeye (Junonia coenia). I hope everyone is hanging in there through the chaos. Love and Light.

Close up of a nest of black, orange and white small caterpillar in webbing between stems of a shrub.

From Wikipedia: The mature Western Tent caterpillar pre-pupa is 4-5 centimeters long. The caterpillars are black, grey, or white with an orange stripe running longitudinally across the body. There are blue-white lines on each segment with dispersed setae extruding from the body.

They are considered an invasive species but like most of those us humans are responsible for introducing them to a foreign ecosystem.

A macro photograph of a hoverfly on grass. It looks as if it is looking up at the camera with his big eyes. He’s a long hoverfly, but not particularly big. The front of his face is light yellow, then there are two huge eyes. His thorax is bronze with faint darker stripes and yellow on the sides. His body is black with pairs of yellow dots. His wings are spread out to the sides, clear but with some iridescence.

A macro photo of a floofy brown and tan moth from the front. The moth's legs, head, and thorax are covered in fuzzy hair-like scales. The legs are mottled brown and tan, the head and thorax mostly tan. The moth has black eyes and large brown, feathery antennae emerge from just above the eyes. The moth's wings are just out of the plane of focus.

Love to see it. We’ve only had one that I’ve seen. A few years ago and it was the huge Asian kind but it was in this epic #invertebrates MMA battle with a pair of wasps and I was on my knees on the front sidewalk like a weirdo filming it with my phone like Nat Geo. 🤣

Affectionately known as a cheesecake or a tuxedo nudi among my friends, Doriprismatica atromarginata is my most commonly encountered nudibranch.

This one was a trend-setter, sporting the single rhinophore style. I wonder how it lost it?

A photograph of two seven spot ladybirds, well, making more seven spot ladybirds. These are fairly large ladybirds with red bodies with black spots and two white spots by the thorax. A black head and thorax with a few white spots. Very pretty ladybirds and loads here. We counted to 35 and gave up.

Coccinella septempunctata.

A photograph of another Andrena sp bee. Not sure which one. There were quite a few of these very little bees buzzing about. Its thorax is deep brown and bare with some yellow hairs on the side. Its abdomen is also brown, with white stripes. It’s also sunning itself on some cow parsley.

A photograph of an absolute stunner of a hoverfly. This is a rather chonky beast, with a bronze-brown thorax and a yellow and black striped abdomen. It is outlined with small golden hairs, which makes it glitter in the sun. Very blingy. It is sunning itself on a cow parsley leaf (those plants were very very popular!)

Epistrophe eligans.

Another angle of the bee muffin tray, with each bee smiley face looking a little different. The chocolate was too runny but adding some Nutella and extra cocoa powder made it easier to work with.

We also saw several very beautiful flies! (I never thought I would say that).

This, for example, is a Carolinian elegant, found in the eastern United States, from New Hampshire all the way down to the Andes region in Ecuador.

P.S. Now I wonder about the 105mm because of the vibration control.

A bit more camouflaged this one. A gem doris nudibranch on pale algal turf. Shades of browns and golds, blending in with the background, but with many raised bumps along its mantle like little embedded gems of blue.

One of a few more subtle palettes among the nudibranchs and slugs still to come! A gem doris. Less flashy with the visuals, still a stunning little nudi. Love this gradient of brown to gold with a splodge of sky blue.
