Live Q+A: Live: Don't know what to believe online? Our experts show you how to spot misinformation Thanks for the question Janelle. As AI content becomes more prevalent, this is definitely an evolving teaching and learning space. But, to respond from a media education standpoint, in Australia, we're fortunate that media literacy skills — like knowing that different media (like photographs and news stories) are created by someone in different ways (like written on a computer or captured through a digital device) and for different purposes (like to inform, entertain and persuade) — are embedded within the Australian Curriculum, in subjects like English, Media Arts and Digital Technologies. These types of skills help children (well, all of us really) to understand the mechanisms of production behind the media and information content we engage with. Outside of school, we can also help children to identify the difference between what's real and what's not by having open conversations with them about the media and information they're coming across in their day-to-day lives. We can ask them to tell us what they like or dislike about the content and get them to think about why that might be the case. For example, if they're looking at something produced by AI, you could ask your child whether they would have created...

"As shown in Figure 7, there was no significant correlation between care score and belief change for false claims in the wearable condition (𝑟 = −0.13, 𝑝 = 0.26)."

"In contrast, a weak but statistically significant positive correlation was observed in the no-wearable condition (𝑟 = 0.19, 𝑝 = 0.025). This counterintuitive finding suggests that without the wearable intervention, participants who cared more about a topic showed a slight increase in their belief in false claims."

"As shown in Figure 8, in the wearable condition, there was no correlation between AOT and belief change (𝑟 = 0.004, 𝑝 = 0.966). However, in the no wearable condition, a significant negative correlation emerged (𝑟 = −0.219, 𝑝 = 0.010), indicating that without the wearable, individuals with higher AOT tended to think critically and reduce their belief in false claims..."

Inoculating students against AI-generated scientific misinformation A new form of academic misinformation has emerged, which differs from earlier waves of misleading online content. Unlike older forms, which relied on poor sources or obvious bias, misinformation from generative AI tools includes convincing explanations and citations and professional-looking visualisations. These “AI slop” outputs appear credible and authoritative, and they rarely indicate whether the sources are real, fabricated or incomplete. So, for students still developing their academic judgement, distinguishing between legitimate research and hallucinated outputs is increasingly difficult. GenAI raises an urgent pedagogical question for universities: how can we train students to evaluate scientific claims critically when the language of science itself can now be convincingly simulated? What to do when faculty spread conspiracy theories in the classroom (Re)learning critical reading in the age of GenAI Spotlight guide: Critical thinking in teaching and research One response is for universities to foster “competent outsiders”: students (and graduates) who might not possess deep, specialist knowledge in every field but are equipped with the evaluative and social competencies to engage critically with scientific information. To train students in the necessary critical thinking and analysis skills, instructors can draw on an interdisciplinary framework that combines science education, psychological theory and media literacy. Inoculate...
