Three women affected in one machine room, all against the regime, and all keep their heads down when they are in a group.

Tagebucheintrag vom 3. April 1935 Heute als unser Kaffeegast der Kaplan Dr. Baum bei uns, der im Winter mein französisches Kolleg gehört hat. Baum ist vollkommen pessimistisch. Die Kirche vermeide Streit, solange sie könne, das sei ihr alles nicht so wichtig, sie meine, das gehe vorüber, und sie bleibe - wozu sich da Unannehmlichkeiten aussetzen? Ein alter Pfarrer habe ihm neulich gesagt, in einer Versammlung sei ein so komisches Lied gesungen worden, das er noch nie gehört habe, etwas mit Horst Wessel - was und wer sei das eigentlich? In einer Geistlichenversammlung habe der Vorsitzende ruhig erklärt, der gegenwärtige Zustand sei nicht so wichtig - »wir haben das dritte Reich erlebt und werden das vierte erleben«. Er glaube nicht, daß das Ende der Regierung nahe sei, sie habe zuviel Macht, das Volk sei allzu versklavt und von Lügen idealistisch nationaler Art betäubt - und wenn das Ende einmal komme, dann mit vielem Blut.

The Church will avoid conflict as long as it can, it is all not so important as far as the Church is concerned. It thinks everything else will pass and it will remain - so why risk trouble? An old priest had said to him recently, such an odd song had been sung at a meeting, one he had never heard before, something about Horst Wessel - what or who was that? At a meeting of priests the chairman had calmly explained, the current situation was not so important - "we have seen the Third Reich and we shall see the fourth." He did not believe that the end of the regime was close, it had too much power, the country was far too enslaved and numbed by idealistic-nationalist lies - and if the end did come one day, it would come with a lot of bloodshed.
