Her neck forms a smooth, graceful S-curve, bending downward. The plumage shifts from bright white on the body to a warmer cream and buff tone along the neck, slightly damp and textured, with individual feathers clearly visible. The face is defined by a sharp contrast: a clean black mask covers the base of the bill and surrounds the eye, which is dark, round, and alert. The bill itself is a bright orange-red, vivid against the black, with the tip angling gently downward. The portrait is a the combination of fine detail and soft background. The reed stems behind her create natural framing, while the out-of-focus blue-grey water gives the image depth without distraction.

Went to check on the swans this morning, found Mrs Swan preening herself standing on the nest, could see that there are no eggs yet.

A pair of mute swans paddling around a lake suddenly noticing me trying (and failing) to be stealthy.
A few minutes later the male decides he needs to chase me away. It's not just me, he does this to most everyone.
I was spotted by this pair at the lake, then I got charged a few minutes later. This guy does this all the time, he's not friendly.

Nestled deep within a stand of dried reeds, a Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) rests in quiet calm, its head turned back and orange bill tucked softly against its shoulder. The neck curves gently downward rather than stretching upright, a posture of deep relaxation, the bird’s vigilance momentarily eased within its reed-bed sanctuary. The swan’s snow-white plumage glows against the warm golden tones of the dried Phragmites stalks. Low-angle morning light falls across the breast and back, casting fine reed shadows onto the feathers and revealing the layered texture of the wing coverts in remarkable detail. Each feather shaft catches the light individually, giving the bird an almost sculptural presence. The nest is a broad, interwoven platform of flattened stems, the bird settled low into its cup with weight distributed evenly, every aspect of its posture signalling full commitment to brooding. The first hints of fresh green growth among the winter-worn stalks place this scene firmly in early spring. There is no raised neck, no spread wing, no tension. Only stillness.
