Feral animals, biosecurity and careers on agenda for young Aboriginal rangers When you bring more than 200 Aboriginal rangers together from mobs across nearly all of South Australia, you get a lot of laughter and a fair bit of good-natured teasing. But also, an invaluable shared learning experience to inspire those taking on the job of caring for Country. The first ever South Australian Aboriginal Land and Sea Ranger Conference took place in Hahndorf last month, organised jointly by the Alinytjara Wiluṟara Landscape Board and Daryle Clarke of the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation's Yarluwar-Ruwe Rangers. Many of the young rangers have three years or more of formal recognition and experience under their belts. Others are just starting out in their careers and will be joined by more newcomers following the announcement late last year that the federal government will fund another 82 ranger projects across the country. Shared challenges Currently there are 29 Indigenous ranger groups in South Australia, and Mr Clarke said the conference was a chance for them to network, and understand their shared challenges. Aboriginal Cave Paintings of Now-Extinct Tasmanian Tiger May Shift Extinction Timeline Recently identified rock art in northern Australia may offer a surprising clue about when the elusive Tasmanian tiger vanished from the mainland. Alongside depictions of Tasmanian devils, the artworks suggest these animals may have survived far longer than previously believed, while also highlighting their cultural importance to Indigenous communities. A research team from Griffith University in Queensland identified 14 images of the now-extinct Tasmanian tiger and two of the Tasmanian devil at sites in northwest Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the family has also adapted their people’s art practice — called “Altyerre,” or “dreaming” in English — to spread forth and testify of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ to Aboriginal Australian communities in a shared visual language. Just over five hours south of Sydney, dozens of Indigenous rangers gathered for a three-day forum – the first ever ranger conference for the far South Coast. Taking place at Mystery Bay, the event is surrounded by significant Dreaming sites – the Mother mountain Gulaga and her two sons, the island Barranguba and smaller mountain Najanuga. For Yuin Djiringanj Elder Warren Foster, seeing the intergenerational cohort makes him feel "proud and deadly". “It’s good to see all those younger rangers coming together. Connecting together and learning off each other," he told NITV. “They’re learning a lot about looking after Country, looking after Mother." Over 50 rangers from six of the South Coast’s Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) attended the summit, representing ranger programs at various stages of development. Aboriginal ranger work covers a variety of land management tasks, including cultural burning, monitoring threatened species and managing sacred sites.
