Round-bodied fly, covered in fluffy, glossy, chestnut brown hair - sitting in the sunshine on a vividly green leaf with spindly legs, and wings outstretched. Fly's head is small, with globular compound eyes (touching at the middle, indicating a male) - and a long, dark, pointed proboscis points straight outwards from the head.

Another, similar bee-fly - basking above some sunlit soil. Eyes this time are separated by a band of fluff - indicating a female.

Been busy - but with the spring sunshine this week? Bugs galore! And I finally managed to get some photos of bee-flies - Bombylius major.

Cute, round and fluffy? Of *course* they're parasites - lobbing eggs into the nests of solitary bees...

An absolutely appalling photo of a bee fly resting for a millisecond on some dried grass. It’s a rotund and fuzzy fly with wings splayed out, clear with dark edging at the top. It also has a long proboscis jutting out the front.

And because it’s FlyDay, I present this fly. Not just any fly but the first bee fly I’ve seen this year! Yes!!! The flying teddies are back!!

A Dark-edged Bee-fly sitting on a dead brown leaf on the ground in bright sunshine. The fly's thorax and abdomen are covered in a dense coat of brown hairs making it look rather fluffy. The wings held spread out to the side and are darkened along the front edge. The large eyes touch in the middle showing that this individual is a male (eyes of females have a gap between them). The bee-fly has a very long straight proboscis which is uses to drink nectar from flowers.

Gymnocheta viridis: a very bristly, metallic green fly sitting on a gravestone in bright sunshine.

To see these beeflies, Australoechus sp, flying around in the Fynbos, SA, has to be 1 of my life’s highlights

Many were buzzing around Micrdon capitatus, the heady catstailbush - a rare endemic to this region. Rare because of habitat loss (land clearance) & invasive species.

We watched two female dark-edged bee-flies flicking their eggs towards solitary bee nest holes in Glasdrum Woods last week. I've seen plenty of these furry bee mimics before but never managed to see this amazing reproductive strategy

The Greater Bee Fly (Bombylius major) mimics a bee, allowing it to approach solitary bee and wasp nests unnoticed. Females flick their eggs inside, and once hatched, the larvae consume the host’s larvae.

In the garden today. With the sunshine and relative warmth, along came our first Anthophora plumipes (male and female) and Bombylius major of the year. Only managed pics of Mrs Hairyfoot, and most of those were duffers.
