📊 Assessment is necessary for good teaching. #Grading is not. Dialoguing with, listening to, and observing #students are often our best #assessment. #LeadInclusion #EduSky #UDL #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL #SBLchat #TG2Chat

I definitely agree with your method. Even if you're offering gentle constructive criticism to a student, most people are more receptive to feedback when it starts with a positive. #TeacherEd #grading

As a teacher, I provide feedback that highlights strengths first, guides improvement step by step, and supports each student’s growth. #TeacherED #grading

Yes - same here. Feedback should be timely, specific and nice. We encourage them to continue improving in our feedback loop. #TeacherEd #grading

In elementary art the primary goal is exposure to the materials and processes over the final product. When providing feedback my focus is to ensure safety with the tools and guide them to follow the required steps. I do this with positive feedback and step reminder prompts. #TeacherEd #grading

Some examples of ffedback/grading I might use moving forward with my students are giving them more 1:1 feedback so we can gauge where any disconnections might have happened and I can also offer praise directly ##TeacherEd #grading.

I agree. I’ve noticed that when I highlight what they did well first, they’re more willing to improve. I also try to make the “improve” part specific and use a revision checklist, so they know exactly what to work on next. #TeacherEd #grading

Agree 100%. I also end my feedback with something positive. Students are always going to be revising, editing, rewriting, etc. so it makes sense to me that providing encouragement along the way will yield more student ownership over their education. #TeacherEd #grading

Let me give you my scholarly, professional, insightful, and immediately actionable summary and take on the matter: it’s a gigantic mess. Good look to all instructors out there in the grading trenches.

Formative Assessment

Instead of:

“I need to grade this.”

Think:

“What can I learn about my students’ thinking from this?”

I think starting with a positive feedback and then sliding into what needs to improve is the best way for me. I start by saying this was great but then move on to maybe we can work on this a little more. If i start with just the negative, the student will shut down. #feedback #TeacherEd #grading

As an instructor in #higherEd #grading term papers this year with #AI around has been something else!

Broad statements, little or no engagement with classroom discussions, methods that were not used and references that don’t exist were some telltale signs #ai #hallucinations #slop
