This four-storey mural, painted in 2016 by the artist, Faith XLVII, is located on the side of a red brick building on SW 11th Avenue in downtown Portland, Oregon.
In shades of grey, the mural depicts the rear view of a woman standing with her hands held behind her back, her elbows bent inwards to the center of her back. Her dark hair is up in a messy chignon.
She’s dressed in a full-length dress - the cap-sleeved bodice is fitted in a Victorian flourish with many buttons down the back, below which full side-draping billows slightly over what seems to be a flared underskirt from hip to the ground.
Her pose might be one of indecision - the hands are not relaxed. Perhaps, as this mural is on the side of a building housing a bridal store, the model’s posture along with the mural’s title ‘Capax Infiniti’ - which translates to ‘capable of the infinitive’, might imply a deeper meaning?
The side of the building is so tall it fills the length of the image, and two thirds across the frame from the right edge. The third on the left is a bright sliver of a window on downtown Portland, with sunlit leafy trees, and municipal buildings on the skyline.
At the very bottom, walking along the sidewalk are a young couple dressed in summer clothing strolling past the building, glancing to their left as in anticipation of seeing the renowned mural - by which they are completely dwarfed.
NOTE: The POV of this image was from across an open car park space next to the building.
This view is no longer possible. Some years ago, a commercial high-rise was built on the parking lot, next to the mural building; the front flush with the other commercial businesses on the street. Allowance was made in the portico design for the mural to still be viewable by the pubic but, at a four-story height, her majesty has been sadly cramped and lost.
So glad I caught it when I did.
A post-development capture from Google of its new situation is posted in the thread below.
For a long time, I’ve been wanting to share my favorite #street_art from #Portland #Oregon - so for #TagTuesday here she is.
Btw, you can no longer get this view.
