Wildfires are spreading into places that rarely burned before Wildfires aren’t just getting worse in places that already burn. They’re also showing up in regions that used to be relatively protected, including areas closer to the poles. A new study argues that this shift is becoming a serious and undercounted threat to biodiversity – especially for species that already live in small, fragile ranges. The research links climate-driven changes in fire activity to the future risk faced by thousands of plants, animals, and fungi that are already flagged as threatened by wildfires. “Our research shows that wildfires pose an ever-increasing threat to biodiversity,” said study lead author Xiaoye Yang, a researcher at the University of Gothenburg. “Nearly 84 percent of species vulnerable to wildfires will face a higher risk by the end of this century.” Wildfire risk has been underestimated A lot of biodiversity research around climate change focuses on slow, creeping pressures, such as habitats gradually warming, rainfall shifting, and species moving uphill or poleward. But fires don’t behave like that. They strike quickly, reshape landscapes, and can wipe out entire populations before they can adapt or relocate. This study aims to fill that gap by asking a blunt question: If fire seasons lengthen and burned area grows,...

Gravel gardens can cut wildfire and heat risks. It's being used outside fire zones too Unrelenting heat, wind and lack of rain can create inhospitable conditions for plants, as well as humans. But a simple change in mulch can help gardeners mitigate damage from those conditions, and wildfires too. That’s one reason so-called “gravel gardens” are growing in popularity. When airborne embers land on plant-based garden mulches like pine bark, straw or wood chips, they ignite quickly and risk spreading fire. These organic mulches can even trap heat and combust spontaneously. Many high-risk municipalities actually discourage or restrict organic mulches within a specified distance from homes and buildings. And gardeners in fire-prone areas have long embraced covering bare soil with inorganic, aggregate materials, such as 1/4-inch pea gravel, tumbled granite or brick chips. Now, that strategy is becoming trendy to other regions. In addition to addressing fire-safety concerns, using such aggregate 4 inches deep in beds and borders also helps prevent weeds from taking root, improves drainage and reduces runoff, which helps cut back on water waste. To be clear, organic mulches are the gold standard for many applications. They nourish the soil as they decompose, improve moisture retention and also suppress weeds. Organic mulch is also more beneficial to plants with high water and...

Evacuations ordered in Southern California as winds fan fast-moving wildfire | CBC News The fire was burning in a populated — but not densely so — unincorporated part of Riverside County, in a recreational area near the city of Moreno Valley, which has a population of roughly 200,000.

Smoky, fast-growing #wildfire in windy Southern #California has prompted multiple evacuation orders and warnings. Springs Fire broke out at about 11 a.m. on Friday and by the evening had grown to about 14.17 square kilometres, with fire crews starting to contain it.

USDA proposed more roads to control wildfires until new evidence showed they may actually accelerate how forests burn Wildfires have ravaged many parts of the nation in recent years. The USDA has proposed building more roads in states that experience wildfires on a regular basis. However, a recent finding has proven the opposite to be true. States like California and Hawai’i have been devastated by wildfires that left millions with no homes or businesses. How can constructing more roads actually accelerate how forests burn across the nation? How the climate crisis has become the issue of our generation Climate change is a notable and serious threat to mankind. It can adversely affect everything from our health to the stability of the global energy sector, and even fundamental systems that sustain life on our planet. The World Meteorological Organization recently confirmed that 2025 was the hottest year on record. An increased temperature will inevitably lead to more and more dangerous and life-threatening wildfires. Climate change has a far-reaching economic impact on the world. The devastating 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles cost the state an estimated $100 billion, in addition to many people losing their lives. The world is literally on fire. Animal life on our planet is finding it hard to sustain their habitats The overwhelming impact of wildfires...

Wildfires are speeding up snowmelt and draining natural water supplies If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you’ve probably already heard the familiar warning this year: snowpack is running below normal, and that usually means a more anxious summer for water supplies. New research from Portland State University (PSU) adds another layer to that worry. The study suggests that as wildfires and warm winter rainstorms become more common, some mountain watersheds may lose their snow storage earlier and faster than we expect. The key culprit is something called rain-on-snow: events where warm rain falls on an existing snowpack. That combination can trigger rapid snowmelt and boost flood risk downstream in just a few days. The PSU team found that snow in burned forests melts significantly faster during these events than snow in nearby unburned areas, which means less “banked” water is held in the mountains for later in the year. The study comes from PSU’s Snow Hydrology Lab, led by Kelly Gleason, an associate professor of eco-hydro-climatology in the School of Earth, Environment & Society. Rain-on-snow events in the Cascades In the Pacific Northwest, mountain snow isn’t just pretty scenery – it functions like a giant seasonal reservoir. It slowly releases water into rivers and reservoirs, supporting municipal supplies, irrigation,...
